Helping rats make their bed!

Here is a newbie question for you. I saw in another post where someone stated that rats will sometimes kill off their pups if there is not enough bedding. How do you determine if they have enough bedding?

Just put in lots, and you won't even have to worry about it ;)

I've never heard of that before??? I put 1"-2" in their tubs.
