Hello. I just returned from picking up a large female Rat. Not sre what kind? If it is any kind LOL. Shes nice and big I'm gonna be picking up a male tomorrow morning!
LIke her? Shes a sweetie(sorta). But she'll get better with some good hand feeding.
OH I got her name from The Rescuers Down Under. A movie placed in australia. There are two main characters (Bernard & Bianca) They are mice(I KNOW I HAVE RATS). LOL Well its pretty cool some Frilled Dragons, and a big Goanna in iT!!!!!! lol

aaw:) im hopefully getting another rat from my breeding project at college! yay!
are you picking her up by the tail? ive never liked doing that with rats, i prefer to scoop em up or just grab them:) lol they tend to like me more! mine were horrified when i tried it! plus when they get bigger i think its wiser to scoop em up, that much weight bieng dangled on a tail is a bit scary! give her loads of cuddles and treats! and let her ride around on your shoulders! mine love that:) plus it will be easier for when you take babies from her, she will be nice and friendly! i think mine are over friendly... but thats not a bad thing!
good luck!

Ok.......well I dont think it should hurt them but yes i agree maybe scared her:) I was alittle cautious with pickin her up cause I just got her. But i just did and shes fine. I'm gonna buy some treats and try to take her on walks with me. I ALWAYS walk very long distances...i.e. to the PETSTORE:) Its about like 2 miles or more away!!!! I wonder if you can leash tame them? I doubt an adult maybe if you start with a baby. Probably using a guinea pig leash?? LOL ok do you have pics of yours? And was the person correct in saying he was a Hooded Rat?
XxRachxX
09-05-03, 02:38 PM
i made a little leash once, and i found they are very good at wiggling out of them!!! lol. unless you have a very large male then i doubt the g-pig leash would be small enough to be honest... i looked at them tough...but i think they would much prefer to be free roaming! mine dont like to run around the floor or anything, they just run straight back to me!
yeah she's a hooded.
these are mine! the brown one is named ratty aka big ratty and the grey/white one is called baby aka little ratty! big ratty is a piggy and eats everything, little ratty is a picky eater, so she is smaller, but also 8 mths younger.. the oldest is about 2 i think^_^ little ratty doesnt like cuddles or bieng picked up!, prefers just to run around on your shoulders, big ratty is a big cuddler and gets kisses every morning!:) aaw theyre lovely/odd!

Ah cute. What kind and they dont look very big? Are the males larger then females in the rat world?

Hi Snakeman, from the 2nd pic it looks like a guy rat, just a word for a some good breeders....don't buy the biggest females you see, start with large or even med. only because even I sell off my retired "jumbo" females who no longer produce, and I don't have snakes big enough to eat them. If you buy med. you may have to wait a little longer for babies but at least you'll know how old they are. Check the sex of your rat again, it's just a guess but it looks like there's extras to me?? Good luck!! Rats are FUN

male rats in general grow faster and are bigger then females :)
snakemann87
09-05-03, 02:50 PM
hmm do you have a sex difference pic?? that would help. Oh and this is the only rat they had. I didnt pick the biggest:)
AymKing
09-05-03, 02:54 PM
Well, you could post another pic only of his....well you know and I'll tell you, no problem. :)
snakemann87
09-05-03, 02:55 PM
LOL ok brb......gotta be sneaky tho!

09-05-03, 02:58 PM
I'd just lift the back end and shoot, oh my gosh that did not sound good. Well you get my point, LMAO

09-05-03, 03:02 PM
oh one of the best ways to breed rats is to set up a colony, a small one would be 1 male 3 females. Or like I have mine 5 males 15 females. ;)

that is a male. Females don't have balls..
I have kept many rats in the past, both sexes included. If it's a male, you can definately tell. If you have to guess whether it's male or female, it's a female.
AymKing
09-05-03, 03:22 PM
Yep Kristina yourrrrr right!! Better change it to Bernard Snakemann ;) I could tell from the farther away pics even, but that's ok, he'll make a great pet!! And hopefully a good breeder too!!
Congrats on your new little guy! Males do get quite a bit larger than females, but I find them to be more placid. Rats make awesome pets :D

LOL you haven't met my rats! :p 150+ rats I don't have time to socialize them (nor do I want to get to know what I have to kill  ). Half of them squeal and freak right out and try to bite if I try to pick them up mid-section, but when I transfer from tub to tub by tail they just hang. Wouldn't recommend doing it for an extended time however, can't be terribly comfortable! Only rats I hold mid body are babies/young and my two pet rats.

Btw there is NO time at all :D
For sure they are cute animals but me neither want to get to know me well. Who knows if there isn't a rat mafia and finaly meet "Tony the Italian ratman" waiting for me round the corner to whack me down?? :D

yeah well if snakemann only has a few breeding rats then i guess he will have the time to socialize!
i'd love to cuddle 150 rats in a day! you should charge people to do it! lol
i thought it looked a little bit male..... but i also thought it may just be because of holding it by the tail...... oh well! looks like your off to buy a female then!
snakemann87
09-05-03, 10:18 PM
Yes tomorrow morning!!!!! Should i get a medium female right??
Off to change my SIG:) LOL
AymKing
09-05-03, 10:50 PM
Yes, medium would be good, at least with that you'll know she's young. After the birth of her first litter and if the male is still with her he'll breed shortly after with her again. She'll be constantly pregnant. Which will be lot's of rat pinks for you :)

Ok cool thank you very much for the help

OH and does squeeling neccesarily mean.....uh ya know:) LOL
What do you think of her?
AymKing
09-06-03, 08:32 PM
Hi Snakemann! You did good! she looks more like a large but she looks to be in really good condition. You should get some babies in about 21 days from now!! I bet she gives you 12, they are both very cute!! do you see a difference in the sexes now?? Easy huh? I'm glad I could help, let me know if you get little ones!
Squeeling, well he's probably getting to know her;)
XxRachxX
09-06-03, 08:47 PM
the squealing is probably them duking it out! the female showing him whose boss! lol mine still tend to have squabbles, pushing each other out of the nest^_^
i wonder what kind of babies you will have?
unknownclown
09-07-03, 02:49 AM
:) Yay congrats the new rats:)
But...um.... Snakeman, I dont mean to nag or nit-pick....but... you do realize that your male is missing the skin off of the tip of his tail. Please tell me you choped off that bit of bone exposed
:p blech.
Ive had that happen a twice while was holding rats by the tail. It realy freaked me out the first time.
snakemann87
09-08-03, 05:42 PM
Thanks Aymking:) They are awesome I hope i get some babies!!! Although about the medium and large......compared to the otheres they had shes definately a medium!! lol
Yeah I did notice the female pushing hte male LOL
I CANT WAIT TO SEE WHAT THE BABIES LOOK LIKE:) I'm so curious:) I'm gonna keep at least one:)
Very cute little girl, congrats! :)
snakemann87
09-08-03, 10:50 PM
thank you Linds.....unfortunately she is kinda mean LOL im workin on it though:)
Also the tip of my males tail is just bone! and someone said its best to put him away and buy another........:(
that means the skin has come off, probably from being held by the tail.
what we do with bitey rats is wear gloves.
snakemann87
09-08-03, 11:38 PM
yes i know. I held him by the tail once.......to take pics. I noticed the shop keeper held it b it tail to show me and im sure he did it other times
unknownclown
09-11-03, 12:08 AM
you can just cut the bone off, Ive done it a couple times with a razor blade, they dont seem to realy notice me doin it. Ive had it happen while picking them up by the tail in a hurry and then all of a sudden they do this spin/roll type thing and the tip just comes off.
Make sure the tail is clean and watch it for infection, but it should be fine. ( as long as ya chop the bone off ;) ) I wouldnt "put him away" if you realy like him unless theres a realy bad infection in there.
snakemann87
09-11-03, 05:51 AM
Alright thankyou. I'm going to wait for an infection before I do. But is there anything I can put on it to prevent infection??

09-11-03, 07:36 AM
TCP? that kills bacterea, i wouldnt pay for a special rat disinfectant i'd just use a human one.
Does any body have any idea what kind of babys two lovely rats like that would make?
I want some variation in my litters when i start to breed them:D
good luck snakeboy87 ;)
snakemann87
09-11-03, 07:50 AM
LOL thanks KingFfaj they are nice huh? I think the female is pregant.....so when she has babies ill show ya! But if anyone knows I'm curioius as well!!!! Oh and its SnakeMANN87:)
I'd clean it up well and then apply a triple antibiotic ointment a few times a day. For the healing period I would also remove the loose substrate and replace it with newspaper and replace that frequently. You want to keep debris out of the wound. Keep an eye on the other rat, if she is irritating the wound you may want to seperate them until its healed.
snakemann87
09-11-03, 09:21 AM
OK will do. ALready put newspaper in 3 days ago though:)
snakemann87
09-11-03, 01:16 PM
YEHAWWW......I think my female may be pregnant and ready to give birth! Well shes getting alot fatter........and today I found all the newspaper in her cage into one corner shredded up!? Could she be?
KingFfaj
09-15-03, 10:12 AM
snakeboy87 the anticipation is killing me, shake her up and down or somthing.
do you have to remove the male once the babys are born anyway?
unknownclown
09-15-03, 06:04 PM
haha I wouldnt go shakin her that could just cause problems ;) and the male should be fine in with the female and babies.
KingFfaj
09-18-03, 12:20 PM
so what happened???
snakemann87
09-19-03, 03:11 PM
Nothing yet. The gestation period is about 23 days.......so I will be waiting! But i believe she is pregnant she is fatter!
KingFfaj
09-23-03, 11:24 AM
