Tomorrow morning I have my first day at my new job. I am teaching a class of 6 and 7 year old children at an elementary school in St. Catherines, Ontario. I am sooooo excited. I already met most of the parents, and they're all great, so I think the year will run smoothly. Anyway, thought I'd share that. Oh, our class pet is a corn snake!

cheers all, and thanks for reading!

God help the teachers. There are badly under-compensated for what they do. Good luck.

Hey Mike,

Sounds fun! My wife and I both started new assignments today too! She is a first year teacher and has a grade 3 class. This is my second year in this district. My position is interesting to say the least. Between two schools I'll be teaching the core French program for grades K-8, science, social studies, math for a grade 5 class and a grade 6 class, Psy. Ed and god help them I'm the guidance councillor for one of the schools!
Our class pet...a corn too!
Good luck this year,
Trevor

wow trevor, sounds like you have your hands full! but, it's a very rewarding career so it balances itself out.

Thanks all for your kind words of encouragement. Teaching kids is very rewarding, and to me is hardly work at all. My first day went spledidly... :0)

cheers all, and have a good one!

Lucky kids! Only class pet I ever had was in elementary school we had two kissing fish. I remember bringing in my Iguana a few times with my dad to show the kids though :) Good luck with the new job

I disagree... I mean I don't mean to put down teachers in general. But I hate the teachers that go on strike because they're "only" getting 40k - 50k. Now I'm not gonna get into detail with my personal life... but my dad works a HELL of a lot more than any teacher I've met and it takes a much bigger toll on him than teaching seems to. And he makes less than the aforementioned amount. Btw, he's a radio talk show host.

Now, like I said I don't mean to put teachers down... I've had some that have made a huge difference in my life and I'm very thankful for them. But then there are those that don't know half the **** they're teaching yet they want more money?

There's a good chance I'm taking a lot of stuff the wrong way and there's an even better chance that the horrible teachers only live around where I live... I live in one of the worst school districts in PA (literally... like top 5 I think)

just to let you know J-Man...

I guarantee you you would be surprised how much teachers work. Though this is my first paying job, I have been a supply, volunteer and I did a 3 month placement. First, there's the stress that parents put on them...and believe me it's a lot to deal with. Then there's the fact that you are paid for being at school, yet you put in a couple hours most nights marking, doing lesson plans or whatever planning you need, and aren't paid for that. So that 50k does not include all the extra time you put in. I guess some teachers are better than others, and it takes a good teacher to put in all that extra work, that in my opinion comes with the job.
teachers are surely underpaid....though I guess my opinion is somewhat biased these days! haha...
cheers,
mike

Like I said it could be that I live in such a horrible school district (thank goodness I'm homeschooled now). The teachers I had when I went to school were absolutely horrible... I mean you would ask a question and most of the time they had to go look in the book (math especially) and I'm not taking advanced stuff.... I'm talking 3rd or 4th grade. And I guess it's not so much that I disagree with teachers getting more pay... it's more about the fact that I think there are other occupations that need more compensation first....

I ddidn't bring one in yet. I've got to make sure that classroom managment won't be an issue with all of the different groups that will be in my room. Also because I teach at two schools there are three mornings a week I wont be there. I want to make sure that the corn is going to be safe first. I'll probably take one in for a visit first to see how it goes.
Cheers,
Trevor

that's probably the best idea... take it in for a visit. I'm sure it will be warmly received. cheers,
