Well last night was a close call...

After a long and enduring week at work I decided to pick up a bottle of wine on the way home., settle in, thaw out some rodents, feed some babies, drink a little wine and watch the tube. Drink a little more wine, well ok maybe a lot more wine.:)

All was fine until I fell asleep around 11:30 and then woke up at 12:30.

Downstairs, one of my baby kings was in a tub with what I thought was a secure lid. Well I was wrong...

Ah $%^&, loose cal king.

Well after 1/2 an hour of quick searching I succumbed to the fact that I was going to have to move all the furniture (again) to track him down and that I might as well just go to bed.

Well this morning I got lucky and found the little guy not too far away under the edge of the carpet. Thank God, he ate his two fuzzies, guess he couldn't move quite as quick..;)

Don't tell my wife she will never let me live this one down...;)

So has anyone else pulled a "Big Ooops" lately?

Jim

Ahhh that sounds funny!!!! Once in awhile when I am very tired I will forget to snap my corns rubbermaids shut....the edges stick sometimes and I forget....luckily none have taken off during these mistakes. But now I re-check three times LOL.

Those Cal-Kings sure are opportunistic escape artists...the never miss a chance to get out into the real world!

Cal kings are natural escape artists. We named ours Houdini because he broke out twice the first night we had him.

No "big oopses" recently, but last new years eve I was in such a hurry to get over to my friends place that I forgot to close the lid on my BPs cage... needless to say, he wasn't in the tank when I got home. :( The most nervewracking part (other than having him missing of course) was that my parents didn't even know that I had a snake in the house!! OIE! Talk about stress... lol... I kept having visions of them finding him in their bed, or stepping on him at night on the way to the bathroom, or something equally terrible... I tried putting a heat mat and water dish under my bed with no luck -- even had a mouse under there a couple of times... nothing. But after a week of searching, the torture was over -- one morning when I opened up the cabinet in the fish tank stand to feed them, there he was! :D Man, I was practically doing a joy dance, and I'm sure I had the biggest stupid grin on my face... lol...
Ever since then, I've been extremely paranoid about making sure that all lids are closed/locked ;) Don't live with the parents anymore, but having a snake loose in the apartment doesn't appeal to me any more than having a snake loose in my parents house did... lol.

Anyways, congrats on finding your little king so fast :D And I'm sure you've learned your lesson about drinking and herping... hehe...

Never had a really "big" oops; just a little one. A juvie corn escaped eyesight during a cleaning. Search lasted a little while but thankfully had been recently fed so didn't go far. Nearest cozy spot for a little juvie was the toddlers' sneakers !!

I had a stupid oops once... I saw that I hadn't put the lid on my western ribbon snakes cage down properly and freaked! they are too darn fast and it was in the basement with a drain in the floor. Ugh! I had visions of her going down there and drowning, or being anywhere! The stupid partwas my fault because as much as I checked her furniture to see if she really left I missed poking around in a small hollow of a fake tree stump... I was sure it was too small, but there she was! Tightly curled up there and NOT comming out!

when they escape it's always the keepers fault, whether it's poor cage design, negligence or another animal got into the cage. Now while you can't think of everything ahead of time for cage design and other animals getting into the cage, you can always be diligent about making sure things are closed (i know it's not always easy, i've left my own share of cages open).

Here is my big "OOPS"

My ball python is in a 30 gallon that sits on a dresser in my closet. So I forgot to secure the lid one night, and go downstairs to hangout with some people. After a while, I came upstairs, and he wasnt in the tank. My roomate and GF helped me look everywhere for him. I finally found him wrapped around an empty hanger in my closet, hidden between t-shirts. Lil' ******* :)

Oh boy! Yeah, drinking and herping...I wouldn't know where to start with my list of stories, so I wont. but heres a couple basic tips up an above the obvious, return all charges to their quarters and secure all cages...
Don't drink and post on forums, but if you must be
careful what jpeg you post.
Don't forget to put that bag of 500 mice that you took 2 out of, back in the freezer.
And another would be, don't hold the Anacondas while sipping Jack Daniels naked

My water monitor once pushed a hole through the window screen while I let her roam around the room.
I thought for sure she was gone forever. I found her outside in the top of a tree at the edge of the roof!
Luckily she was pretty tame and didn't bolt when I went to retrieve her.

OMG as if I just a total mental picture of Roy Stockwell tuning his guitar nude. The saddest part is I don't even know what Roy looks like....so you can imagine what the mental picture was of.

LMAO

Speacking of herping and drinking.... A few weeks ago I decide to feed my snake when I came back from a friend's house, after a few beer. Luckly, no escape herps. But I felt asleep in front of the TV and forgot about the 2 big rat and 7-8 small one (if I remember corectly) under a heat lamp. :ashes: They all cooked and split open... and the smell... I'll never forget again!!!

I still have 3 mth old BCI loose in my house. But the clothes hanger thing gives me an idea, with any luck the hunt will end tonight.

My only oops so far was when I left the lid on my year-old corn's tank slightly ajar... found him curled up under a t-shirt in my dresser lol

Jim you're not the only one that likes to drink...The same thing happened with me and THREE times! :D
First time was with my Ball 3 years ago, the same exactly, fall asleep in erect position on my couch, with the ball on my hands, after a looot of beers. After half an hour of sleep, i opened my eyes, see my hands empty and jumped up like crazy starting searching and moving every furniture in the room, when, after 1 hour of endless searching i go to sit a bit on the couch, remove the little pillow and the ball was coiled there, as nothing has happened... GOD!...i felt so idiot! :D
Another time happened with my burm but is a big snake and cannot go somewhere that i couldn't find him.
The 3d time happened with my aesculapian snake but not from a nap. I didn't secured the door of her cage and after an hour i saw her roaming slowly in the room, lucky me, i handle every day that snake and is very calm and never moves realy fast :D
But that's it! I promised to myself, never drink and herp! :D
