do your snakes seem to 'know' if the prey is dead allready? my bp will snatch a stunned in a heart beat, but a p/k or f/t he just mosey's over, and starts to eat it, and only constricts it just a little bit, but it looks like its force of habbit! does your snake do this, or is my snake a dork? thanx

my snake came to me feeding on p/k and she had been eating them dead for months and she doesn't even constrict and I have other friends that have bp's that don't constrict dead prey so nah he's normal

I have some snakes that will constrict their f/t prey and some that will just start swallowing. I dunno why they do it.
the first time my guy got f/t he held it for a very....very long time. as if he wasnt sure it was dead.
But its odd that they would eat it know it was dead. I didnt think they were scavangers in the wild.
If I'm not mistaken (which I very likely may be) I think I remember reading that it has been proven that some wild snakes will take dead prey. I could be wrong but I'm sure I read that. Maybe someone more knowledgable (SP??) can help more.

Maybe the heat produced in live makes the difference, dead is cold or at least room temp.?
yeh that's probably it aym. that's what thier pits are for anyway. They are very sensitive heat pits and they can prolly tell that it's not warm enough to be live after so many meals.

A few of our corns will constrict their prey. Trinity and Neo are absolute beasts with it. They usually give it a triple coil! It's great to watch. The neonates just seem to start gulping it down. I suspect it has to do with how long they were fed live before switching to F/T. All of the ones in my collection that were fed live for longer constrict. Those who were given prekilled almost right away don't seem to bother.
My retics, burms, and blood all constrict dead prey. My cal king is the only one who won't constrict, he just starts feasting.
