how do i tell from a pastel and a normal?

Solid, a pastel is exactly what it says it is, it has more pastelly yellows and oranges than a normal ball. it also usually has a good deal of blushing also. Another way to tell a pastel is the head , it has a purple-ish tint to it, and the eyes are silvery. Look in my gallery to see a beautiful example of a pastel jungle.

I honestly can't believe the price on pastels. I dunno... it seems to me to be a LOT of money to be paying just for a python that's a little brighter than its cousins. Now Piebald.. THAT is a morph worth paying for.

You are right in a way Invictus but they are much brighter than a normall and the true gole for most is the Super Pastel now that is Bright ;)

Honduran; thanks for the compliments, I think that Graziani's Line iis, by far, the most spectacular line of pastels out there. The cam I use is a Canon PowerShot A40. It was taken under natural light, on my Dining Room table. Striko, the morph on the cover of "The Ball Python Manual" looks like a pastel of some sort, not sure though..

You managed to answer your own doubt within your post ;)

It's the combination of Pastels with other known genetic mutations in which the Pastel can/will only make them better. Being an incomplete dominant morph (not sure if it was the first proven incomplete dominant morph?) surely helps keep the price tag higher as it can produce the trait visibly in the first generation, unlike most of the other commonly known morphs that follow simple recessive inheritance......

The future of ball pythons is going to be crazy ;) Check out <a href="http://www.newenglandreptile.com/">NERD's website</a> for some examples.

All of this in mind, the value of Pastels started out just as high as the rest, but has come down and will continue to come down a lot faster than say Albinos or Pieds :)

honduranfreekk,

Thanks, I've always liked Pastels.

Invictus,

Piebalds are great but I don't have a spare 10K to get one. I bought my pair of Pastels mostly for the purpose of producing a Super Pastel.

mykee,

I agree that the Graziani line of Pastels are the best "normal" Pastels but I think NERD's Lemon Pastels are far superior.

Ron, I also think that they are beautiful, but way out of my league. I feel that they are in a different class than the Ruppels, Bells, Grazainis, Gniadowski, NERD. But for the pastels that most people can afford without a 2nd mortgage, a Graziani is the way to go. I'm terrible biased however, since I have 2.2 of Graz's.

Ron

mykee,

Lemon Pastels aren't completely out of reach, when you produce a Super from your 2.2 you can sell it and buy a top quality pair of Lemons.

I too believe that the Graziani line is the best despite the fact I have a pair of NERD Pastels. I intend to buy a pair of Graziani Pastels and keep the 2 lines seperate.

I'm not sure what line is best. Check out Corey's posts of the NERD line he hatched this year and they are right up there. All the lines are spectacular. In the future, because all the "lines" are compatible (unlike ghosts and axanthics) there will just be "Pastels". No line-stuff. But they will be graded, for sure. Much like Jungle Carpets are now. But the line stuff will disappear as they are all the same genetics.

Jeff; gorgeous, I agree with you regarding all the inter-breeding of the pastels that one day, they'll all be the same. But not mine. Also, Corey's snake is beautiful, but I've seen a few pics of NERD's pastels as adults, and they are, quite honestly, less than impressive. I'm stickin' to my Graziani's (both from Greg and Mark) and will not 'weaken' my bloodline with a different colour variation. I also want pastels that still look like pastels once they hit 1500g's.

Jeff_Favelle

Yeah, there are some Pastels that look normal-ish as adults. For sure. But if you want the cleanest Pastels, you're going to have to breed Super males to the best-looking female normals. Regardless of the line(s) you have That's the way to do it. Its going to be fun to try though eh??

Jeff,

Hopefully I'll be able to do that this year.

Its the way to go man. Its going to be more and more fun every year to work with Supers and multiple-genetic animals as each clutch will have more morphs and we can see faster results! The Supers are just the tip of the iceberg eh??

Tell ya what. Produce a BP that feeds as readily on prekilled prey as a corn snake. I'll pay $1500 for that!! :D

Ron
09-03-03, 01:23 PM
If you own a BP you have to accept the fact they are going to go off feed once in a while. I have a few that have never refused even when I offered food every 2 days. I also have a few that go off feed for 4 months at a time and they always snap back without losing much weight.

Jeff_Favelle

I LOVE that they go off of food. Less $$ for me. I have literally hundreds of snakes right now. I wish they would ALL go off food.

Clownfishie
09-03-03, 07:41 PM
LOL -- that's only true when you actually give up on trying to feed them though Jeff ;) I'd much rather be spending my money on food that my snake actually EATS, than food that I defrost only to have them refuse it and I have to throw the stupid thing out (as my BP forced me to do yet again last night... grrrr... lol ) ;)

That's the joy of having sooo many snakes (plus the monitors) Jen. There's ALWAYS another snake waiting to eat, so NOTHING gets wasted.

So, if I'm hearing you correctly Jeff............your solution is to get more snakes.

hmmm, your ideas intrigue me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
