C'mon... They're hip hop guys tryin to be punks. Unfortunately, they are way too cought up thinking punk is "just being yourself" and not caring what otehrs think... Well... Sorta... But thats not the half of it. You want some punk rawk, kiddies? Sex pistols. Sid and Jonny are probably the among the first "real" punk rockers. Ramones, they started the punk movement! Black Flag, oh my... These guys are brilliant! Clash: enough said. Operation Ivy: Angry ska-punk that was so underground, it was almost mainstream. Misfits (early stuff, before the breakup/reunion) were hard, fast, and everything punkgoth music should be.

And for the good punk rawk today, try Black Halos, Dropkick Murpheys (they gots the idea), and some Vandals.

Notice how none of these bands are very big on big crazy mohawks or liberty spikes, or pocket chains galore, pyramid studded objects, and facial piercings. This does not make punk rock.

Now, if I can turn you to an even better genre; Psychobilly. DL some nekromantix, mad sin, tiger army, death valley surfers, astro zombies, batmobile,go cats go, etc. www.wreckingpit.com or www.psychobilly-net.com. Great fun, psychobilly...

oh god..I have so many opinions on crappy pop punk. I won't get into that, because I can definately say that it will end up as a major flame war. How old are you guys? I have a feeling most of you are young ;)

Anyway, I despise Good Charlotte and every other band like them. With the exception of OLD Blink.. I listen to them and go to their shows. Their new stuff sucks, though. I'm very opinionated about music.

If you want some real punk rock, check out NY Dolls, Dead Boys, the Clash, etc. good stuff.

nobody here claimed that they are punk rock. I dont mind them. sometimes they try too much to be popular. i like thier first album. I would call them pop punk.
I can understand why people who listened to the ramones and such classic punk would complain that GC and some other bands arent punk, but in defence, music does change. You cant say some modern rock bands arent rock cuase they dont sound anything like elton john, or Queen or something. It just changed and branched out. Just look at hip hop or RnB..If you compare Run DMC to someone like 50 Cent or Ludacris, they have a totally different sound. Its all still hip hop right..
I just call the music i like Punk cause its the easiest way to describe it. I listen to bands like Taking Back Sunday, The Used, Finch, Northstar, The Starting Line, stuff like that. I dont claim that they are like the Ramones, and i dont care if they are, i listen to what i like
im not attacking anyone here, just sharing my veiws, as others have.

The problem i find with old punk bands in the lack of technical talent and most of the clash's music is very time and area specific
As in the huge lack of employment in the u.k. in the 80's and riff's are based on basic chords and i cant stand the regge they do
The ramones also use a few basic chords and have mostly short simple songs But music is all about prefrence what you like is what you like and thats it

punk wasn't about talent..
it was about rebelling against society and wrecking stuff up and find a place in society in their own little 'groups' non-comforing to the mainstream standards. they didnt care for talent.. good ol' punk rock 'n roll.. i mean look at the misfits... easy easy songs just the same chords over and over.. but none the less fun.. and enjoyable... i myself do enjoy talent.. i'm more into metal.. and prog rock and that stuff.. but older punk.. with exceptions of newer punk bands sounding punk rock 'n roll.. are good :) ok i dont think i made sense but oh well.. \m/ rock on \m/

I used to listen to punk and at the same time rap music, weird eh. There is so many different types of music I can relate to I m not going to listen to one type. I can't stand these punk bands now all they do is wine about how there girlfriends left them. Punk is about freedom and destroying the system, being a social out cast these punk bands have the same message as the BackStreetBoys. Yet I am not going to single out punk, rap now has the worst message its all about clubs, sex, cars, money, drinking etc. My two favourite artists is Lil Dap (rapper) and Neil Young, how is that for musical diversity.

I know punk wasnt about talent and most of the stuff still isnt but there are talented punk bands As in bad religion , propagandhi and such but I myself just cant listen to the same simple riffs over and over again some just dont care i do

crucified
08-30-03, 12:48 AM
well yeah propagandhi have some talent.. they have some metal influence :) and i agree there are punk bands that have talent.. look at afi.. im a huge fan.. they do have talent.. and i know they could branch out so much more but it seems like they just hold back.. if you've seen beyond the scene footage of their make of sing the sorrow.. jade just rockin' out on the side.. he's good.. .. but yeah.. lots of punk bands aren't about talent and the same riff over and over is boring.. but sometimes they do have some catchy ones that arent :) i found the misfits pretty catchy and i didnt get bored of their repeatative riffs.. older misfits.. when danzig wrote the songs.. and what not.. plus other punk bands.. but i know what you're getting at bryce.. ok.. i ramble too much.. i should stop :| don't read this.. DONT READ THIS! ;)

Who? What? Huh? I have no idea who most of those bads are. :D I didn't even know Good charlotte existed until they accepted their award at Mtv. Oh well but if you like it listen to it if you don't....then don't. It's all about individualizm, different people like different things. It's all good (except country!) I will download some of this stuff so I can give a educated opinion. :D haha

Lol you should have put the dont read this at the top and it would have made me read it faster LOL
Propagandhi has quite a bit of talent I didnt realize it untill i got a hold of the tab's many of the chords were made up by the lead singer of the band. They also dont really sound like anyone else I have heard.
Good charlotte and mest and the *new* gob sound damn near the exact same i Abosutely HATE it when bands change there style in order for it to go on the radio. metalica WAS Fricken Amazing untill they started changing to make the big bucks and the last album was iffy it sounds like every other drop D inspired band. But people will choose what they like and i am not going to infringe on there right to like it

08-30-03, 02:11 AM
metallica are still rockin'.. one of my fav bands.. along with cradle of filth. afi. gas huffer.. KING DIAMOND!!! zakk wylde/ozzy 'n pantera.. ;) well i like plenty of others of course.. but yeah.. metallica still rock hard for guys in their 40's.. best concert i have EVER seen and will EVER see.. well metallica and cradle of filth! :D
unlike most ppl.. almost everyone.. i like the new metallica album... they are one band that has been awesome and has changed every album.. i mean look at slayer.. you heard one album you heard'em all.. every album of theirs sounds the same.. i dont like bands that cant change to something a tad diff at least :|

08-30-03, 02:22 AM
oh yeah and as much as i hate to say this..
i think Sum 41.. yes.. Sum 41 could have some talent if they got out of that pop "punk"(?) garbage they play.. i mean the metal covers they do.. they do the songs some justice.. they play'em a lot better than other 'more' talented bands can play them.. well so i've heard and other 'punk' bands too.. haha.. sum 41.. ugh :|

Some change is good but listen to RTL and then St anger its no where near the same there werent any solo's!!!! the band that is known for amazing solo's had no solo's in there latest album! that was scarey St anger Was ok but not much more then that. The riffs sound like Korn riffs it was stretched out on pro tools till it pissed me off. but The lyrics were still very metalica like but in a different musical style
As for ozzy all his solo albums were just like repeats of old black sabbath albums. so metalica and ozzy are basicly the extremes of change and staying the same. The music should change a bit since the band changes over time but Try to keep some of the same sound at least it seemed to me that metalica changed to fit in with the new music comming out but if the change is because they changed it cool but it seems like it was too much of a coinsadence (sp? it late and i cant spell anyways) to me

Who's the lead guitarist in Good Charlotte (the guy with the most tatoos)? Isn't he the singer in a very popular punk band? I know I saw him somewhere before in a video.
Ohh Kristina, you said this in your thread "If you want some real punk rock, check out NY Dolls, Dead Boys, the Clash, etc. good stuff."
Do you mean New York Dolls when you said "NY Dolls"? The reason I am asking is because New york dolls is a VERY old band and the lead guitarist of that band is now, none other than the notorious Blacky Lawless of W.A.S.P.

nofx are good..really good, but they aren't classic's like some of the bands I mentioned. They play pop punk, too..it's just raw pop punk, and they steer clear of the mainstream, they refuse to be played on mtv and the like. i have major respect for them. they're really cool guys, and have been awesome to me each time i met them after shows.

katev17
08-30-03, 04:22 PM
I don't think you can label a song here and a song there, that's just pushing being nitpicky. Someone once told me that NOFX sold out... that's just... lame. How can a band sell out if they don't change their ethics or beliefs, and don't even know when radios DO play their songs? ...

Oh wait, I forgot. They do want to be on the radio... They even SING about it.. 'Please play this song on the radio'... (It's got ooh's and ahh's in all the right places).

Someone mentioned the Vandals? Thumbs up. Propagandhi? Excellent. Sure we can go into who's a classic and who's not, but what's the point of comparing bands? To each their own, and no 2 bands are the same. Well... except maybe Blink 182 and Sum 41... and Good Charlotte... and The Ataris... and ......*drifts off*

NY Dolls.. (johnny thunders \m/) i got into the dolls like 6-7 yrs ago when i found an original pressing of their s/t in my moms record collection.. oh yeah.. i was a hot shot in gr 7 ;) ... Dead Boys (Stiv.. rip).. The Stooges... Iggy pop the godfather of punk.. ;) and you know it.. hrmm.. *think*.. arg.. i cant think.. but yeah.. good job on naming those bands at least.. hahaha :D and the sex pistols and clash are garbage :|

Hey bruce, Black halos are back together! going to see them sept 19! I find the guy quite fun to hang with (he managed my friends band for a bit). Good charlotte have good music, but I hate their persona! And punk rock, has changed, yes... but It should still be dirty, uncut, and balls to walls with energy. The band would be much better without their lead singer... He is a wank... hehe.

Bryce Masuk

I find nofx funny as hell but The singers voice just makes me want to punch the guy in the face But none the less they have songwriting talent not everybody can make things funny as hell and still have a message in the song.Bad religion is kicking *** still 20 years later and they only had a few moments where they nearly gave into the whole mainstream lets get rich Bs and sound the same as everyone else crap
But thats what sells but the whole music industry is going down the tube so hopefully they will finally get beck to what it was and let music be music

08-30-03, 05:01 PM
"please play this song on the radio" is a JOKE. if you actually talked to them or listened to their lyrics, you would know that. jeeze. Anyway, who cares..you have your opinions about nofx and I have mine..but don't talk about things you don't know, okay?

How did nofx sell out? I have never heard them on the radio. ever. and even if I did, what difference does it make? Does being on the radio mean you've sold out? Because then the clash, the ramones, even the NY dolls have sold out. I don't think so.

I hate the term "sold out"..music evolves..so do people, that doesn't mean they "sold out" for money.

Hey dude, not only did you sound snotty, you also proved how you can't sense sarcasm ;)...

1) I never said NOFX sold out...

2) My sarcasm literally could have been cut with a knife... NOFX are my favourite band.

if you actually talked to them or listened to their lyrics, you would know that. jeeze.
I guess I could say the same to you, seeing as my very next line after talking about that song was a line from it.

I never even talked about bands that actually sold out... I was saying I think it's LAME for people to say bands sell out. "Selling out" is the stupidest term ever, and it basically means that any band that's accepted money or compensation for playing a 'gig' has "sold out".

Sorry if >I< sounded 'snotty'.
