View Full Version : Weird mommy rat behavior??
One of my rats recently had her babies, and anyway today while I was feeding and watering the cage, she grabbed one of her babies and walked over to me and dropped it in my hand. I told her it was a beautiful but that she could keep it, and a few seconds later she took it back and dropped it into the pile. Then she did it again, and again! Why is she doing that? Is she trying to pawn them off on me or something? It's her first litter if that means anything.

LOL that's too cute!! I think I'd end up making her a pet at retirement :o I've never experienced anything like that before, they carry them around, but never give them to me!
lol yup it was funny. But weird too, because we aren't really friends or anything. She also has this worried expression when I'm around. But then again they all do.
Hehe, i wonder why they get so worried! ;) But that must have been so cute to see her do that! :)

I'm not able to kill'em now (I feed f/t).....if a rat did that to me I would probably cry!

lolol...she probably understand that hand of yours, taking away others' mommys babies and she is confused.
She don't know what will happen now that she has her own babies and she is stressed.
She doesn't bite you at all??? -just asking...

she probably understand that hand of yours, taking away others' mommys babies and she is confused. Well that would be interesting because it could mean she sees through wood and plastic and that I have taken a pinky from another rat when none of my snakes eat pinkies.
She don't know what will happen now that she has her own babies and she is stressed. So she's giving her babies to me? That makes sense.
And nope, she's never bitten me!

You keep them in wooden cages? And they don't chew on it?

Next time that rat do that thing, be sure to have the camera with you:)

You don't know how a stressed animal will react...
Being stressed, can do anything.
Rats are very smart animals, i couldn't reject that she is giving her babies to you for that reason...but, i feel there's another reason doin' that weird thing.
~Greg~
They don't live in wooden cages. Hence why I said plastic.
I know a stressed rat will stuff herself into a corner with all her babies under her. It would be completely illogical for her to give me a baby, that would be like a mouse giving birth in a cat's den. But yeah, I don't think it's due to stress.

very odd, maybe she views you as another rat and wants to share raising the young with you, a community of rats share the raising of the young....its funny watching them steal each others babies, go and get them back and then take others to put in the one they just stole from. i dunno was just a thought
