How do you all measure the length of your ball pythons? Mine just shed today and i thought that i could measure the length of the shed and get an accurate measurement. Is this an accurate way to measure or no? Thanks

I just use a ruler or tape measure. My problem is getting the snake to sit still long enough to straighten her out and get an accurate measurement.

you cant measure a shed, a 4 ft snake could have a 6 ft shed no lie!

If you have a Digital Camera, take a picture of your snake looking overhead with a metre stick or ruler of some type.
Once you have done that, there is a little program called snake measurer that was made by someone on this site I think. It does a good job of measuring your snakes length.
Just make sure your snake is laying flat on the ground when you take the picture.
If you cannot find the program, I'll put it up on my webpage.
Let me know and I'll put up a link.

I just do an approx. measure. I have a 4f lon enclosure and she is almost as long as it. Maybe 3.5F long.
Also, when they shed, there skn stretch so the sheded skin is not acurate.

cant you just take a piece of rope and start at the head and then all the way to the back, then measure the piece of rope? Just an idea :D

doenoe,
Good idea. I never thought of that. Again, hopefully the snake will sit still!
Stalabros,
I would like to see that program.

Haha doenoe before i got to the end of the post thats what i was thinking. LOL
take a piece of string, yarn, whatever and run it the lenght of the snake then take the string (or whatever you used) and measure that. It should give you a pretty accurate length of your snake. That's how i measure mine.
Sheds are useless for measuring!!!

I agree with Drewlowe, i use the same technique and it works out very accurate.

I've used that technique to measure my snakes, and depending on how still they sit, the measurement varies greatly. But yes, measuring sheds is useless. If that worked, that would mean I have an 8 foot corn. :)

Here is a link to the Snake Measurer file. It's a .zip file, save it, extract it, and it's ready to go.

Enjoy!

Thats what I was going to say. I measured my male like that and got the measurement of 39 in 2 out of 3 times.......so do it three times and average it..lol
