View Full Version : breaking glass
I just noticed that the bottom of my 40 gal. breeder tank is all shattered. It could've been possible that i bumped it with something but the break is just so scattered i really doubt that's what happened. I was wondering if it could've been from the UTH and if so, has anyone else had this problem? I'm not even sure if glass would break from the heat from the UTH but i'm going out to buy a new tank tonight. If it's possible that it broke because of the heat how can i prevent it?

A UTH will break the glass on aquariums, it has happened to me.
you should run a dimmer switch (rheostat) on it, that way you can adjust the heat to where you need it.
some of those UTH get up over 100 deg, which is too hot for alot of animals.
you can also instead of sticking the UTH directly to the tank, just place it underneath the tank without sticking it on. but make sure it is secure and wont fall on the floor.

HetForHuman: where can I get a rheostat and how do I set it up to the UTH? I want to use UTHs in my new enclosures, but have no idea how to work them. Thanks!
Sorry to hyjack your threat Pookie! :D
Lol, no problem ohh_kristina! I'm also wondering about the rheostat. I've never heard of them but they sound great! I'm in the process of coming up w/ a set up to ensure ventalation between the tank and the UTH. We shall see how it goes.
