I use potted plants in all of my cages and what I do is cover the exposed soil in the planters with large pebbles and small rocks. Every once in a while a freerange cricket will get under those rocks and I figure well that's one smart cricket to figure that out and perhaps he deserves to live just that much longer. The crickets eventually come out though and then it's game over for them. As for the dirt, obviously there are very small areas of soil that the rocks won't cover and my chameleons seem to know this. Once in a while I will catch my critters zapping that small area and eating the tiny amount that gets stuck to their tongues. This is very infrequent and I figure they do it when a certain mineral is lacking in their diet or maybe they are just plain bored! I use only quality soil with no additives for the plants that go into any of my cages, so I don't get too concerned when they get a small lick of it once a month.

Cheers!
