Just curious what you guys use for the elimination of that 'generic rat smell'? I keep my rat breeding racks close enough to my living quarters that even the day after cleaning, my place smells like 'rat'; not rat poop, or urine, just 'rat'. My questions to you is what methods have you guys used to eliminate or mask the smell? An Ionizer, an air purifier? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

We use an air purifier.. Doesnt get rid of all of the smell, but it does work pretty well

I have some success using Sox after cleaning their cages. You can buy it from PJs. I do not think that it is possible to entirely remove the smell/odor of rat.

Hope this helps.

well when I had a mite break out a few months ago I sprayed some RID highly diluted with water inside the cages and it took the smell away instantly. Now every once in awhile or every other cleaning Ill just use that since it does smell nice and is perfectly safe. Other than that I do keep a fan in the window which blows air out instead of in my room and clean the cages about every 3 days.

Never noticed the smell until we moved them all into a single room last night... this morning the room definetly had a barn smell to it. so now we will be installing a fan in the window to act as an exhaust in addition to the air conditioner that sucks air in...

You need to keep them in a separte room, and simply install washroom type vent fan, in a window. Make sure you get a one way damper for the fan so that the smell wont blow back in during a storm... I run two such fans in my window, and I only clean every two or three weeks. But boy, when we had the power failure, the entire house reaked!!
You'll have to remove a pane of glass and replace it with wood.. Cut a hole for the fan, then insulate all around it. Its not too hard.
