what are your opinions about the true red-tails: guyana, surinam, peruvian, ect. ? how do they compare with columbians as far as temperament and personality? which out of the red-tails do you like the most and why?

I always wanted to get a hold of them because of their awesome beauty, but I really dont know too much about them on an indivudual sub-species level. My only experience is with columbians. help me out--

I've heard that you are pretty much trading beauty for temperament. I could be wrong but for the most part the true red tails have a worse attitude than their less-gaudy cousins.

I think that attitude depends on individual snakes. Most red-tails I have handled have similar attitudes to the commons I have handled. The main differences I see are in husbandry, red-tails are less forgiving of the mistakes that commons deal with regularly.

It really depends on the snake! I have had B.c.c that were mean and some that were dog tame all from the same littler.

As for starting out with a B.c.c I would go with a Guyana/Suri opposed to a Peruvian or one of the more expensive types. B.c.c are not as forgiving as B.c.i when it coems to husbandry mistakes.

Temperament: As with many snakes, BCC vary in temperament from quite docile to super agro. In general, I have noticed that they are generally a bit more sensitive and find a higher % of "unpleasant" temperaments that with BCI. One of mine will repeatedly strike at my face when out unless restrained and wags his tail like a dog

Husbandry: Less forgiving, and if you screw up it can be much harder to get them back on track again.

They are similar enough to BCI, if you like them I say go for it ;)
