View Full Version : Do you have backup?

With the whole mass blackout in North America, it got me thinking about backup. I've been wanting to get my hands on a generator for years now but have never had the lump sum needed... hopefully it won't be too long though! :)

Nope. I live in BC. We have oodles of power. Too much in fact. Something to do with all of our running fresh water and keen technology!

Now if we could only figure out how to keep the Easterners out.

But the new generators aren't very expensive. Crappy Tire even sells low-end models now. They seem to get cheaper every year.

Hahaha I thought we were the only ones who called it crappy tire. :p For the record we have a generator, but we only use it for camping.

Don't have a generator and luckily haven't lived through a power outage of more than a couple of hours since I have my herps. Linving in downtown Montreal has that wonderful benefit, very rare power outages and if they do happen, we're the first ones turned back on :D hehe

So I don't worry about it too much. Would like to get some heat packs in case of longer outages but I doubt I would ever have to resort to using them.

We have nothing for backup, unless candles count. *LOL* So, if the power went out, we'd be SOL.

I do have backup packs for my computers and my fish tanks, but won't last for more than 12 hrs. Hot room do have emergency lights in case somethin' go wrong when working with the snakes. To keep all the lights, heating devices ....running, a separate generator should fit the job.....

My fridge is on the apartment's backup generator but whenever we have blackouts (very frequent in the winter here) I use heat packs and hot water bottles in or near my enclosures as my own personal low-tech backup.

I think I'm going to buy enough generators to power a small town because, well, I'm paranoid now. Besides, if the utility company ever cuts me off again, I'll just laugh like a madman at them. :) And when my generators run low, I'll power them up using public parking stalls! HA! I think I just figured out a way to save a fortune!

we have an inverter that plugs into a cigarette lighter and a portable battery pack (powerful enough to boost cars), we've been thinking about buying a generator and yesterday kinda cinches it

We have one. Never had to use it though. I'm not even sure if it works.

There are many things you can do if you ge a powerfailure.
1st off, your hot water tank will stay hot for at least 30 to 48 hours. So you can fill up some water bottles of hot water and wrap them in a cloth to make a hot spot for your reptiles. Also, if you have some rocks, you can use a fire to heat them up and do the same thing. You can always keep your reptiles on your belly or back, the ehat is often enough for them (better than nothing, but wouln't do that with a croc :-p ). Wrap the enclosures in blanckets, it will isolate it a little...

Did that in the ice storm of (was it '87?) with my iguana. Power was out for 3 days so I kept her in my clothes with me. Hehehe... don't think thats an option anymore... don't think 30 some odd reptiles would fit in there :p

If it happened in winter I'd be up the brown lumpy river without a paddle... maybe a generator is a good idea, or at least enough gas on hand to keep them in my car for a few days might be an option :P

i live in a dorm, so there is no backup option. they keep it pretty well-maintained, though. during the blackout in NYC, the entire city of New Haven still had power as a result of Yale's emergency power generators.

I have a battery back up for my incubators that last about 10-12 hours, it worked great with this last power outage! Great for summer, didn't have to do anything for the herps it was still about 80 in the room, so they were ok for the 8 hours we were out of power. For the winter we have a large and a small generator so we should be alright for some heat and light, and have enough power left over for my herps on the little one. ;)

i live in the city but not in the city, so while we still have electricity our house is designed to be heated by fireplaces. we always have enough of a supply of wood to heat us through the entire winter if needed so if a big power outage was to happen, i wouldnt worry too much because with all the fires going my room gets steaming.
plus we have a generator ;)

I've got an generator plus a wood stove in the kitchen. A wood stove, seems novel I know but trust me it's not!
Cheers,
