bMost WinXP users, including myself, were hit by a worldwide virus yesterday...your computer shuts down every 5 minuites....call Microsoft at 1-800-668-7975 and they will see what they will do ...

Dude you don't have to call Microsoft. Why would anyone want to do that? LOL :D

All you have to do is download the removal tool located here:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.removal.tool.html

i got that one yesterday too. It is the first one that I have got since I started not opening attachments off of e-mails. I have no idea how I got this one.

Annoying as hell. Does not shut your computer down when you are not connected to the net, and when you get the shut down error message, if you set your calendar back a couploe of days it resets the time remaining to a couple of days and not one minute. That way you can down;oad the fix etc without the computer shutting down. Go to www.norton.com on the main page is the info on this virus, as well as the fix and the security update for windows.

Hope that helps others infected.

if You can't fix it simply go to DOS and type in shutdown -a. It will stop the countdown.

Heres how to get into Dos. go to Run and type in cmd.

hope i helped.

yeah, i got that worm too. I was on the phone for over an hour yesterday with my bf trying to figure out what the problem was when I finally got a headache and called it quits. I was pretty relieved to read the news this morning that there is a way to fix it. :)

Chase- Yes don't call them. It's not only impossible to get through but they charge for tech support (i think) and its not cheap.

:D

Why only XP? Sorry, I'm a bit of an ignoramus when it comes to computers and the like... :o

It's actually something that affects NT, 2000 and XP, because of the way the services work in those operating systems. windows 95, 98 and windows ME aren't affected.

Yeah, calling microsoft did not even cross my mind. My poor BF, I rely on him, and when he gets fed up still not microsoft.

That is not a virus... just a worm that abuses the windows RPC interface.... you can download the patch from the Microsoft Download Site

The direct link for the patch is here

Hope this helped ;)

You need both the removal tool and the patch or you'll be reinfected.
