My fiance wants to make a hidebox for my baby girl out of some leftover maple he has. Is maple "ok" for reptiles? If it is, it will need to be sealed with something to keep odors from soaking into the wood. What would we need to seal it with??

Maple is good. No extra sealing required.

if you are talking about urates....then my suggestion is have 2 hides. alternate them...sometimes i find that leaving them outside in a tuperware bin in the heat for weeks " cleans" the stink of to a good extent.

Maple is hardwood, so no worries there. Any non-sealed wood will absorb smells though, so it's still best to seal it. Varathane works just fine for this.If it's good enough to waterproof an outdoor patio, it's fine for a hide box. Let it cure for 2 weeks though.

Varathane can be found at wal-mart or farm and builders?? I also had a suggestion on another forum for Polyurethane Spray. Differences? Advice?? thanks invictus =D
