View Full Version : Polymorphism examples for Crested Geckos

I noticed in one of the threads that polymorphism came up again. I used to have a web site with a chart, but that site is gone for the moment, so I've posted the photo in my album for now.

With crested geckos being polymorphic, it's always a surprise to see what colour and pattern the hatchlings have. Many times I've been shocked at the colour differences between not only parents, but clutch mates. I'm working on a chart to show the colours and patterns in hatchlings from one of my ciliatus pairs. I'll add more examples as the clutches hatch, but for now there's a fairly good start.

Making a Punnett Square to show possible colours in their offspring could be mind-numbing. It would require enough columns and rows to include all the patterns and colours that the gecko's ancestors had.

Isn't genetics just wonderful????

So any kind of crestie can produce any type of morph?
or is it because the parents are het for a certain or a couple kind of morphs?

Alan...

Yup, that is the conventional wisdom on crested genetics. Keeping that in mind, it seems difficult to believe some of the claims regarding projected offspring out there. My sources tell me that the whole heredity issue is totally random with ciliatus.

From what I've seen with my own limited breeding experience, this appears to be true. It would seem that they are all het for anything.

Thanks for clearing that up! That's what I thought too but I was not 100% sure. =)

I've never hatched a fire from parents who did not seem to have that in their background.
When I bred a yellow dalmation to an orange tiger, I got almost everything under the sun but fires.
When I bred a nice fire to the same orange tiger, I got nothing but fires.
Any time I've bred a dalmation, ALL offspring had some degree of spotting.

Hmm, Youkai if you look at the pics above and follow the tree donw, dalminations had offspring that were fires. Thats strange that there is no real connection. Do you think that there are any external factors that can influence the appearence of a crested gecko?

The red one (Grandma) is a red fire dalmatian, though the spots aren't as clear in that picture.

Most of the babies from the mom and dad in this chart have spots, some of them have black/brownish spots, some cream/yellowish spots. A few days ago a clutch hatched with both babies plain, no visible spots, fire, tiger, nothing - just plain deep red. I'm waiting to see if they develop any pattern as they grow.

My original idea was to add a few more examples of babies. Since the website it temporarily out of order (ISP problems), it's a bit much to add them to a photogrqaph. Once I get the site up and running again, I'll add more examples.

Whenever I talk to prospective new crestie owners about colour, I mention that anything goes with them - I actually use the 'het for anything' phrase :)

DragnDrop,
Do you have any cresties for sale now or in the near future?
Thanks
