probably wouldn't absorb a lot. what makes you want to shread it, rather then just reg. newspaper, whole? just curious...

Depends on the type of paper. Many types of printer paper (known as "bond" paper) are treated with a clay-based coating for ink absorption. This coating is toxic even to humans in large amounts, and would probably kill your snake sooner than you can imagine. If you're talking sketch pad type paper, it may be ok. But, you're better off going with newspaper. It's tried, tested, and true.

I use Aspen bedding absorbent & they can burrow through it.

I just thought it would be cheaper with shreadded newspapper and the i can change it more often

I have a blue tongued skink. I line the bottom of the cage with a layer of newspaper. Then on top of the layer of newspaper I add shredded newspaper for him to crawl through. He loves it. And yes, it is cheaper. I already have the newspaper here, so why buy aspen?

I don't get a newspaper. So I usually just shred up white printing paper for my skink. It loves to walk around in it and eat it.

chubbs, did you not read what I posted above about the coating that is put on printer paper? I used to work in printer/plotter support, and I became quite a paper expert when I worked in that field. You are using something that could be very toxic to your lizard. I'd strongly advise you to stop.

I use Cypress mulch my Rat snake gargoyle loves it. But for the longest i used shredded newspaper worked good for me

I have yet to find a substrate I like, and newspaper is ugly, no way around it. I looking at a new paper product at the moment and if I like it I'll mention it again. It's cheap, looks good, recycled materials, if it absorbs, clumps, and doesn't smell I'll be a VERY happy camper lol.
