They do not need UV lighting as they are active mainly at night. As for aspen for the substrate I wouldn't use it I'd just go with papertowel. If you use that then they can see the crickets easier and also there is no risk of impaction.

I think that if you use paper towel with some nice cage furniture you could have a very nice terrarium:D Don't use aspen, they end up eating bits of it and they can't digest it. Not too safe. Though the tile thing sounds great! East to clean and looks as cool as you want it too, lots to choose from:D

I just checked out those slate tiles at Home Depot today. They look really cool! The only thing is, I like to use undertank heat pads with my geckos. The slate tile isn't going to work with a UTH. It would look awesome, tho.

Why wouldn't the uth work?

I have used hard dirt (almost clay like) with great results. They cant eat it, you can grow stuff in it, and it is completely natural. just be carfull with small loose rocks.

Lisa, The UTH would work with slate tiles, the heat would pas through them.

It would? I figured the tiles would be too thick.

I use a heat lamp with the tiles to acheive belly heat and ambient heat but I think a UTH would work well also.

leo's temps can get pretty cool at night. Technically, they could go down to the sixties at night. I leave under tank heat pads on 24/7, tho.
