IF you are going, be advised that Florida Game will be there also, so lets not forget our permits (see attached e-mail from Florida Game)

"I wanted to contact you and let you know about a specific law enforcement plan that will be occurring at yours and other future shows (not necessarily yours).

As you know, during these shows we encounter a number of individuals who will not have their proper licenses authorizing their activities of selling and or exhibiting wildlife. In the past, we have usually issued Notice To Appear - criminal citations for these violations. This allows the defendant to appear in the county court at a later date to tend to the violation.

This year, should we encounter any non-Florida resident, who does not possess the proper licenses or permits to sell or exhibit wildlife, that individual or business will not be issued a Notice To Appear. Rather, these non-residents will be:
* Placed into custodial arrest
* Transported to the Volusia County Jail and
* Offered the opportunity to post a $250 bail for release.
* Absent the posting of the bail, the individual will have to stay at the jail until their "First Appearance" with the judge on Monday morning.

Obviously, the person will not be allowed to continue their selling and or exhibiting activities and if they are being transported to the jail, they will have to have a solution to the issue of securing their inventory.

The purpose for telling you this in advance rather than just attending the show and "pouncing," is to hopefully give you enough time to inform your vendors of this law enforcement response. I would suggest that you also post this information at the front door to your show.

It is my sincere hope that we do not have to transport anyone. Please "push" this information out to your vendors so that they can avoid this issue altogether. Naturally, if a vendor has to wait in jail until Monday morning, there could be a conflict with scheduled return air flights home.

Please contact me if I can offer you any assistance.

Respectfully,

Lt. Rick Brown"

OK, it is confirmed. There is no way that I can make it to Daytona or Columbia this year. On the upside, at least I will be setting up a venomous display at Elachee Nature Center that weekend. Get to hang out with one Hot Herper :)

Jeremy & Chuck, If you will have a cell phone on you that weekend, call my cell # 772-215-7625 and we can meet up. I will be there both Friday evening and Saturday all day. I will not have a table after all, because I no longer do public shows, and did not keep up the $1000 sureity bond. Wayne and Hank were kind enough to offer refunds to any venders that did not have the exibit bond.

Brian, Just where are your priorities???? :)

Be Blessed all,
Ray Hunter

Jeremy & Chuck, If you will have a cell phone on you that weekend, call my cell # 772-215-7625 and we can meet up.
My cell is 423.580.7513. Joe has not decided if he is going or not. Joe, Barry, and I or some combination of the 3 should be arriving Saturday morning as we are leaving Chattanooga at about 600pm Friday night. We are only staying Saturday and then heading home Saturday night. I am hoping to get a pair of corals and a trans-pacos copperhead. If anyone on here as such an animal, let me know. I have the legal paperwork to buy and transport in FL. Thanks

I have the legal paperwork to buy and transport venomous in FL, but can anyone tell me the legal cage requirements to transport? I have heard they require the snake to be bagged and placed in a locking container marked venomous, but I can not find that anywhere in FL’s official regs. Anyone know if that is true? I greatly dislike bagging hots and would rather double cage them rather then bag them, if that is permissible. Thanks

Chuck they must be double bagged and in a locking box clearly marked ," Danger Live Venomous Reptile" Lock must be locked.you must also have and be able to show to an officer upon request all pertinant paperwork. My bet is they will deffinatly watch anyone that carries out a Hot to thier car and then stop and check them.

Chuck, I also hate to bag hots, but per the law I do it (single bag is legal---see above quote of law provided by Scott), then I place the bag into a metal lockable box with a padlock. I believe it is marked "venomous snake).

Ray can you tell me how I go about getting the $100 permit that I need before I get down there?
Barry, it took me about 3 months to get mine, wouldn’t be possible to get it before the show. They will issue it to non-residents which is good for us. You have to fill out the application and be able to verify that you have 1000 hours experience working with venomous reptiles. Usually private keepers get their hours working with another keeper who already has the permit. When and if you want to get yours, I can sign off for you.

Chuck and Berry, Actually you can get the BOND in one day, but not the FL venomous permit. If you only need the bond, you can call that number and get it issued, then simply have it with you (along with your V.R. permit) and you would be legal.

Actually you can get the BOND in one day,
I have no intention of displaying or selling anything. Only buying a few and transporting them back. All I need is the permit for that, correct?

Chuck, that is correct. If you are not displaying or selling all you need is the permit to possess venomous reptiles in FL

Dang, all these rules and regulations. What happened to the good 'ol days of the freedom to do what you want?

cobraman
08-05-03, 04:55 AM
unfortunately that went out the door when a few people abused the right to "do whatever you want" and become irresponsible, endangering others.

Just a warning to everyone.I just spoke to a friend of mine who informed me there will be no less than 50 undercover officers at the show looking for all types of violations espescially the selling of reptiles outside of the show. If you go please keep it legal and up and up.The person I recieved this information from is usually dead on right so I do believe him. Just enjoy the wondeful animals and dont buy outside the show.

I'm going... and can't wait!!! I'm not surprised that there will be undercover officers (if true), the exotic animal industry is being watched and picked upon with a fine tooth comb. I will still enjoy myself though!

Ray, or anyone else in the area. I am hoping to buy a pair of eastern corals while I am there. Do you have any ready to go? I see from the rules on Hank’s site they are not going to allow us to probe them or check the health. That is a huge negative in my book. I have never bought a snake without be able to inspect it.
