Under 6 months for sure
what's the minium required space?
[questions aren't from me.. I don't want the big pythons]
As an adult you'll need something around 8' L x 3' D x 2' H. I have a female that's around 5' and in a 8'x3'x3'. Its large for her right now.
Males don't get as big as females so sometimes you may be able to get away with something little smaller.

the minimum requirements SHOULD BE at least two thirds the snakes length long by one third the snakes length wide by one third the length high;)
P.S. if fed regularly a burm will get 10' in the first year!! so a 40 gallon WON'T last long:eek:

10 ft in the first year....REALLY!!! LOL
One of my many burms grew 8 ft in the first year, but 10...WOW!!! Thats a biggun....but seriously, it can and will happen.
OK...Story...
Someone contacted me the other day about finding baby BP's in Utah. I told her I had some for adoption and to come pick one out. During that time, I gave her the "tour" of all my snakes. Needless to say, she was impressed...hehe lol....anyway, I took her in to meet "Lucy", my 16 footer. When she asked what kind of snake she was, of course I said burmese. She continued to tell me how her sister just picked up a baby albino burm from a pet shop and how she did'nt think her sister knew what she was getting onto. So...I told her to bring her sister over.
Long story short, her sister, after meeting "Lucy", freaked out and surrendered her baby albino burm to me(Lucy hissed at me and Ive never seen a 50 year old run so fast in my life). I traded her for a more suitable pet, A cornsnake. She had NO idea that the baby burm would get that big and/or potentially larger(16 ft is small for an adult female) because the pet store did not bother to mention this to her. She was expecting this snake to be as big as a ball python. WHAT???
Anyway, please let this friend know what they are geting into. Here is a picture of Lucy to show your friend. And remember, SHE IS SMALL FOR A FEMALE!!!

If you are inquiring about how long a Burm can live in a 40 gallon (and that's not necessarily a bad thing to ask) then you really aren't ready for the responsibility of a 20 foot snake. Try somethin else. PLEASE.
It wasn't for me!! sheesh I was asking for a friend that does NOT have net access.. one of the petshops sells anything without any info.. and since I'm "into snakes" as he put it, he asked me to find out.. I don't like the Big Snakes.. a Ball Python is as big as I'll go

There's a ton of cool, impressive snakes that can be owned other than monster Burms, Retics, and Rocks. Try a Blood Python. They are super cool, and quite impressive in person. Same with Boa constrictors. Just try and steer him away from the Burm as a first snake!! Ha ha!
