calci sand for substrate

I have a gopher snake and a rat snake. I was thinking of going with bark chips for my rat snake. Today while i was out buying mice i found this stuff called heathy bone calci sand. It was made by T Rex. I was wondering if any one had heard of it, And if so would it be a good choice for my Gopher snake. I dont feed in the tank after today, and I only feed f/t. Thanks for any help anyone might give me with this

Hey Coy,
I used to use calci sand for my anoles, but i dont think that calci sand actually has calcium in it. Also, I wouldnt recommend using it for ur snakes because if ur snake soaks in its water then goes on the sand, well, the sand will stick onto the snake wich could be irritating to the snake and if it goes back in the water bowl, then ull have a bowl with sand in it. Also, with my exeprience with this stuff, it tends to stain the furniture when its wet or moist.

Calci Sand is worst than normal sand. Contrary to their claims it does not digest easily, and does cause impaction in animals. And can even be dehydrating with some herps. Hardwood chips, shredded aspen, bark chips/mulches (not softwoods like pine, fir, cedar, etc), and Carefresh can be good choices. Of course good ol' newspaper, papertowels, and bath towels always work! :D

i use indoor outdoor carpet but if this calci sand is bad ill just go with bark chips i like it better thanx

Bark chips are bad as well, they can contain mites and sometimes splinters and much more.

All natural substrates can contain wood mites. They are completely harmless to you and your snake. If you wish to get rid of the, just cook the substrate prior to using it ;)

I used calci sand once and it was a nightmare. I used it with my beardie. I used some light green sand and he looked great on it. Problem is when I misted him or he put his feet in the water bowl the stuff would run and it actually stained his skin. It came off in when the old skin did and didn't harm him but it looked stupid.

i just changed my 50/50's substrate to calci sand. it looks good and really compliments the color of the snake. i never feed in the enclosure to avoid substrate ingestion. i like the way it looks and havent had any problems as of yet. i would like to continue using this product but wont if there are any real reasons why i shouldnt.
