View Full Version : Sarawak short-tailed pythons
Hey folks...I've been AWOL for a bit since it's the midst of hatching season, but I just got these beauties in yesterday & can't resist showing them off a bit. After 2 years of trying, I finally managed to land a pair of Sarawak short-tailed pythons. Thus far they've both been very easygoing, and the fact that they should be ready to breed this year just ices the cake.
Enjoy!

Wow, what neat patterning. I've never been a huge fan of the heavy-bodied snakes, but when I see pictures like this, I start to get more and more of an affinity for them.

No...but I do want to breed them so that other people can come to enjoy how beautiful & amazingly different this locality type of short-tailed pythons can be! :D

If you're not a blood/STP nut, then it's probably nothing monumental. Sarawaks are separated from inland Borneos by a high mountain range & exhibit several unique traits. Their scales are far more pebbled than any of the other bloods or short-tailed's, giving them a texture more like that of an Angolan python. Sarawaks seem to mature at a shorter length than Borneos yet still attain considerable girth, and their pattern is more marbled in appearance with distinct stippling in the lateral scales that is mostly moderate on Borneos. Thus far my pair has been very active - spending quite a bit more time cruising and snuffling around their new enclosures than I've ever seen a blood or short-tailed do, but we'll see if this is a personality thing or just a settling in routine. Obviously we still have a lot of learning to do about Sarawaks, and rumor has it that there has been preliminary DNA work done to determine whether or not they're deserving of separate specific status.
I'll keep any interested parties privy to any information I come across in the mean time.

lol, I am a blood/STP nut and they sound awesome! Just my opinion, but I think the more active thing is probably just their personality, as my Borneo is much more active then any other blood/STP I've seen. Good luck with them, you are very lucky to be able to work with them :)

there very pretty! in a few years i would like to get a nice female to breed with my male sumatrin!
Then you'd need to find another resource...it's my personal belief that these snakes should be kept pure & not crossed with the other locality types or species, especially since final DNA analysis is not complete. To me it would be a sin to go crossing these into the other bloods/STP's before we even have an opportunity to discover just how genetically unique the Sarawaks are. Why muddy waters that aren't clear to start with?

I agree with Kara 10000000000% they are seperate species and should be treated as such. Let not have the bloods end up like B.c.i's where thier genes are soo messed around it's not funny. Please Please keep thier genetic lines clean! As a responsible herper it's your obligation to keep the natural blood lines clean.
