African Plated Lizard - wc or cb

I saw this cutie in my local PetCo months ago. And I didnt realize until yesterday when my boyfriend said "You're always talking about him, why all the whining, go and buy him already!!", that I have been pining over him ever since I first saw him. I guess I didnt think I needed another pet, but if 6 months go by and I can't get him off my mind, I guess I should just bite the bullet an get him, but I digress...

It turns out that they sold him (even though he's been in that store for ages). They said that they could order another one from their supplier, Calzoo, and they told me it would be captive bred. I did not believe them, so I called CalZoo to ask, and they said that they are "field collected in Tanzania". Doesnt that mean wild caught?? I feel strongly against wild caught, but I don't know if there are breeders for African Plated. Does anyone have one of these, or know how I can get one in a PC manner?

Yes that means that they are not only WC, but imported, often under less than ideal conditions to be polite. After all, it's a long trip from Africa.

About every african plated you will see is WC I dont havent heard of anyone Breeding them but its possable so look on Ks you might be able to snag one

I got a story for you on wc reptiles. or Farm raised...

Let's say we were to order 1000 or even 3000 leopard geckos. Do you think the place where you order them will go out for days and collect the 1000 of them?
They farm raise them. And they always have specials when you buy 1000 they are 6$ or buy 30000 and you pay them 2$....
So what they do is gas them a little. The leopard geckos fall in a beauty sleep (if we can call it that) and they just pick them up and put them in a shipment box. They ship those containers to us and when we open them up, they are dehidrated and sometimes many are dead.... It's not all their fault,. but the gazing does kill a number of them. And the airlines have a bog role in it. sometimes your package will spend days out in a warehouse which can be too hot or too cold for your herps.

Anyhow, all this to say I never tought they would gas reptiles in order to get large numbers.

Ok, I fihgured as much, damned PetCo...I found a few breeders off of KS (thanks for the pointer) and there are some cute Sudan CB babies that can be shipped from Florida!

I am so excited!

HOWEVER, there is not really much info on the care of these critters online. What is the minimum space that I need for one of these? I was hoping to use a spare enclosure that I have. Plus there are no real directions anywhere on feeding and whatnot.

Cb can also mean captive born so ask first if your expecting captive bred

I have a female - I got her cheap because she had sores and a respiratory infection. I keep her in about a 30-40 gallon tank (not sure of the exact size, and not really familiar with exact tank dimensions) and I'm thinking about going bigger.
I keep her on dirt, so she burrows. She ignores her hidebox in favour of hiding underneath. She also climbs fairly well, and frequently basks on her log. They like being able to see what's going on, but have a quick retreat. I haven't tamed mine down.

What will they eat? Anything. Animal protein comes from insects and f/t hopper mice (though she will eat smaller, and larger if I cut it up)
I'm sure she'd eat pretty much any protein source that wasn't faster than her

They eat a lot of veggies, so I give mine turtle leftovers. She quite likes fruit, but eats a lot of greens, carrot, squash, etc.

They like it hot and pretty dry, but need a good soaking-sized dish of water.

I dont know how many gallons my tank is. It's really tall, which I imagine is unimportant to a plated (so that will screw with the gallonage). It's 24 long by 12 wide.

24 and 12 is a 20 long
And Ben is reputable but they could be captive born which means they are farmed so ask and find out

But i dont get it. Isnt it good if they are farmed? Wouldnt the alternative be wild caught? Sorry if I'm going around in circles here....

farmed means they are hatch from wild parents the eggs are either found or pregnate females are captured untill they lay. this still depletes the wild population because they would have lived in the wild but were taken before they could. they also are subjected to horrable living and shipping conditions many die on the way here or in the farms unlike CB.
Captive bred costs much more and you many not be able to find any that are truely captive bred. I am not saying this to deter you from buying CH or Wc but to allow you to know whats going on

Plated lizard's are easy to care for they will eat all types of veggies,crickets,mealworms,silk worms,ECT. The tank size means alot you should not go no smaller then a 50gal for one plated lizard that is about 3 feet long and a foot high. They like to dig so sand or some good dirt would be good for bedding also a hide box and heat light & uv light. Sudan plated lizards do well in captivity i have had mine for 7 years he is a CB Captive Born he was shiped same day and i have never had a problem with him but as alot of people said about farmed pet they don't live the best life while they are there but not all of them are bad

I have a male Gerrhosaurus nigrolineatus (STILL looking for a FEMALE for him, :::cough cough:::); he was wild-caught on a 'herping trip' and the couple decided that they didn't want him anymore, AFTER they brought him back to the states. I don't know why, he's one of the most comical, intelligent and personable reptiles I have ever owned.
