View Full Version : Evil Pet Store UPDATE

Do you guys remember that evil nasty pet store I complained about? Well, I got them to change their poor care in their reptile section. How? I GOT HIRED!

I had an amazing day! I started my first day of work from 9:00am to 5:00pm. And it was wonderful! I got there and Aaron (head of fish) showed me what to do during openning. Adding fish to tanks, taking out dead fish, etc. So then Aaron asked me if I would want to work in reptiles for a day, knowing full well that even though I was hired on as a fish department worker, that I love reptiles.

So I spent my entire day cleaning out cham cages, snakes cages, monitors cages, gecko cages, etc. He also gave me free reign on correcting any accessories, health issues, etc. I had SUCH a superb time! I redecorated the Ball Python enclosure with a larger waterbowl and that python seemed SO MUCH more content. Soaked himself and spent the entire time exploring his cage and hunting. I gave that ******* of a Carpet Python a hide (he constantly was snapping at me too, but yet I remain miraculously bite free hahaha). I fed all the corn snakes. Aaron asked me to try and get one in particular to eat, but it wouldn't. So tomorrow we're putting him in a seperate tank. FYI, These baby corns are all related.

I also got to sell some stuff. I sold 2 dozen small feeder fish. 2 dozen large feeder fish. An algae eater. Some neon tetras and a tokay gecko, a SH** load of crickets and mealies. Oh yeah, and two mice!

Anyways, I spent alot of time in the back with the reptiles. Making sure each and everyone was content. I fell in love with the nile monitors *swoons* But the Baby Ball Python is definately my favourite. I got it out of the reminance of a rough shed. Made sure all the reptiles had enough humidity and misted them. Generally I'd say I did a damn good job with them for my first day.

So work was just utterly amazing. Tomorrow I'll probably have to stick to fish since the reptiles are all taken care of now! *pouts* I have a monitor cage to clean and a cornsnake to get into a seperate tank, but that won't take 8 hours!

So needless to say, I'm SO happy I put the effort into learning as much as I could in four days about fish. Because as long as there are TWO people in the fish and reptile department, I'm the head reptile girl. I still have alot to learn about the fish though...but I will.

I like that Jenn. Instead of setting on your bum and complaining you became pro active and did something about the problem. I wish more people where like you. Thanks –chuck

Damn I'm loving all this praise :) I'm in it for the animals. I also, when I sold the tokay gecko told them to go home without it and setup the enclosure as well as look online if they didn't want to buy a book at some caresheets for more info. Hahaha

Remember not to neglect your duties as a fish worker. As a fish keeper myself, we are just as outraged by the conditions fish are kept in as reptile keepers are about how reptiles are kept.

Sounds like you had a great day. Good job on making sure they had adequate care.

Smitty: Yeah I'm still in training as a fish keeper and I went ahead with the reptiles because Aaron and I were both working fish and reptiles and well, I know jack about fish and he knows jack about reptiles :) I feel it was a fair trade! LOL

That's wonderful Jenn! I have thought about getting a part time job at the Pet Supplies Plus near my house for that very reason. You should see how the poor leopard geckos look there! :( No humid hide, always laying around like they are on the verge of death.
Since I am pregnant, I decided that it probably wouldn't be a good idea to get a job at a pet store now. No telling what kind of birth defects can be caused by being around tons of animals all day. Yikes! Maybe later though.
Congrats again on your new job!

Hey Jenn,
I was in the same exact position a couple of years ago. My husband gets laid off every winter, so I got a part time job at the pet store that winter. We did the same thing. Whenever I worked, I took care of the reptiles while my co worker took care of fish. I personally hate fish and know nothing about them, and I was the only person who knew anything about reptiles. Anyway, I also had a great time that winter. I loved working with the reptiles and helping the customers with the reptiles. Unfortunately, when I go to that store now, the reptiles are never being kept correctly (I've been gone for a couple years now from there). Good luck in your new job and have fun!

Great job! I'm glad you decided to do something about the condition those animals were in. What kind of experience did you need to get hired?

Well the fish and reptile department are the same. And they wanted a fish expert because reptiles aparently "weren't a priority"...so, she got my resume and asked me what I know about fish. I told her I knew the basics of setting up a tank and knew like angelfish, bettas, all the feeders, etc. Really not much.

So she told me I have my secondary interview and this job position will be given to the person who shows that they were willing to learn as much as possible in the time they were given....I um *coughs* Memorized their entire wall of fish. Fish first aid and the zones they have them divided in. I may not know much about fish still, but I'm being trained right now for that.

So pretty much, I needed to show a willingness to take that extra step and learn. And I did that. But it was DAMN hard. lol

And as for the reptiles, they all know me as the "snake lady" anyways because I was usually in there like every week buying snake stuff or oggling the new snakes. lol
