Cricket Questions

Ok, I have been buying my crickets from the pet store, and the guy there says they live about a week, which I find to be about right. Are there different levels of crickets you can buy? I mean, i know people buy them in bulk and stuff, but my problem is that i don't have enough animals to eat 500 crickets in one week. Are there crickets that live longer than others, or are bulk crickets just at a different life stage so they live longer, or are there ways to keep them alive longer? Just wondering.

to help them live longer make sure they have food and try to change there egg carton every couple of days so there cage is clean.

Keeping them clean is the most important thing! Feed them every day with fresh slices of carrot, apple, potato and half an orange for moisture. Also crushed-up dog food is required. Of course you can buy the special "gut-loading" product from the pet store, but the above works well for me. I would expect a five week cricket to maybe last for one week under the above conditions, but a two week cricket should last another 4 I would say. If they don't and you feed and keep them clean, then change your cricket supplier!!

how long does it take to pinheads to reach adult size if kept appropriatly?

That's a good question...like all the other sizing I think heat will grow them quicker and cooler temperatures will slow down the growth. I am not a cricket breeder(thank goodness), but have been buying vast quantities of crickets for years and this is what works for me. The cricket breeders here in BC tell me from pinhead to fullgrown cricket is around 6-7 weeks.

I too have been buying huge quantities and i bet i am a breeder i just havent found where they all live and hide.:D

make sure u have enouph egg cartons because if they live in too close of quarters and they dont have food they will eat eachother
a spunge works well for mosture too. i feed my crickets apples and carrots that are cut into little cubes.

I don't have near enough animals that eat crickets to be buying bulk weekly, yet I still like to buy a decent sized lot. My crickets last for a month...

I usually by 10 dozen or so to last me through the week

just get a big tupperware container and put the crickets in it with food A.K.A carrots, apples, potatoes. and a sponge for moisture. they might also get some moisture from the potatoes/apples.
otherwise, see if you can get the amount of crickets you need,meaning if you have 1 leopard gecko get 2 doz. a week.

Mikey's little so I only buy a week's worth. Besides, I like the trip to the pet store cuz they always have a new lizard I'm interested in buying.

When I bought my leopard geckos in March, I also bought 500 crickets. I think they called them 3/8 size???
Since my leos were afraid of crickets when they were babies, I moved the crickets to my basement and forgot about them. I'm not sure if I had mutant crickets or what but they lived forever. Seriously, I forgot about them until May or June and when I went downstairs, they still had dry food and water (I used a chicken waterer with sponges in it), & there were tons of them still alive.
I was hoping to find some still alive last week, but they were all dead. I figured it's cuz they ran out of water. Would that be considered "cruelty to crickets?"

I used cotton batting when i had crickets... rahter than a sponge that is... just a thought...
