Does anyone have any herp related tattoos? I'm going to have my tattoo artist draw up a partial sleeve design dedicated to herps. any suggestions on what I should put on it? I want the background to be scales and the foreground to be vines and the reptiles themselves. I'm still trying to decide on how exactly i want it to look. I apologize if this has been asked before. Post pictures if you have them!

A few years ago, I used to keep Rats. At one time, I had 43! So, I had a cute rat tattooed on my for-arm. Now I have a bull snake, I'm getting a snake tattooed, wound round my arm, just above the rat, with a think-bubble coming from the rat with the words "Oh! ****!" in the bubble. I will have a think & try to draw something up along the lines of what you want.

Bahaha! that's cute, you'll have to show us a picture when it is done. lol.

I have one tattoo of a tiger cub holding a rose. I want another, this one herp related, once I get enough money and design it. I want a leo and a baby beardie with possibly a ball python wrapped around them. ;)

Uh, UMMM, maybe you should get like a tattoo of a butt on your butt. Yeah yeah, that would be cool.

I have two reptilian tats so far... one on my back of a tribal lizard and one on my forearm of a snake and an eternity symbol. I'm in the process of having a sleeve done... they finally broke me out of black and into the world of colour! LOL... next thing ya know they will change me out of my metal ways and I'll have bamboo in ears instead

Sorry no ideas from me since i'm still trying to find one for myself. I have 5 but all are non herp related. If you find an artist and truely like his/her work you may talk with them on designing your own tattoo. If it a truely good tattoo artist they enjoy doing original work instead of flash. In tampa there are PLENTY of great artist!!!

I am dying to get one of my snakes tattooed on my arm or back. But I am extremely catious about going to just anyone because normally you get those cartoon looky snakes. I dont want a snake tattoo in the normal way they do it. I want a really sweet *** replica from a photo I brought in. I think I found the guy to do this but its way more expensive for him to do it like that. So I am saving up :p

Wow. I never knew so many girls were into partial sleeves! I know this is not directly a herp tattoo but I want to get a dragon done on my shoulder down to my elbow. Hey, it's scaley enough to be a herp, right?:D With some intricate vines and flowers in behind to form the sleeve background. I would also like a tribal frog done on my other arm in black. I am also thinking of getting one done on my left ankle. Maybe a leo or some other kind of gecko:D

ohh, I have a 4inch tribal gecko tattooed on my ankle.. lol, pretty neat looking, but I want to get a snake on my arm... more of a symbolic symbol than an actual picture of a certian snake. I am researching to find just the one i want.

I'm thinking of a heart with a burm wrapped around it with some drops of blood dripping off the bottom. That or a Nile monitor in a tripod position.

I have a red-eyed tree frog tattooed on my right leg on the outside of my calf. The next one will be (I think) a coral snake on my left leg in the same spot.

looks like you have a pretty good plan already the scales and vines sound awesome, that will tie it all together and the reptiles can be whatever you like. I'm currently getting a sleeve designed with 5 Ontario snakes winding around each other with a New Orleans stonework and wrought iron designs in the background.
btw elbows don't hurt as much as ditches do! have fun:)

I'm most likely going in next month or so, I may be getting a tribal snake around my arm right above the elbow. I'm starting to run out of room, so, I have to work around what I already have. I have a theme of tribal art on my body already, so, that's why I feel I should go with that style. If I have enough money to get more colouring and detailing, then I may get an ETB wrapped around my arm. :)

I have not yet decided what to get, but since all of my tats say something about me, and snakes have become my life, it's pretty much set in stone that I WILL get a snake tat of some kind. I just have to wait for a while, decide what I want, draw it myself, and get it done.

I have 3 dragons. I dont know if you would consider them reptiles, mythological reptiles i would guess.

My tat was inspired by a few things. Starting about 25 or so years ago, I have reoccuring dreams from time to time about snakes that don't have heads but have human like hands where their heads should be. In the early 80s I painted a painting with these snakes crawling around in various places and have sketched and drawn them many times. ...then for years they were forgotten and as far as I know undreamed of....then the Cure came out with a song called "wrong Number"...lime green lime green and tangerine...the sickly sweet colors of the snakes I'm seeing...LIME green and tangerine...the sickly sweet colors of the devil in my dreams.

Ok...that freaked me out and back came the snake dreams. My original painting was of tan and olive colored snakes...but there were a couple of sketches of orange and green snakes too...so I took one of these sketches to a friend that does tats and he hooked me up. This is my tat:

The knots are knots of unity or working together, not combat and the eye they are holding is a symbol of how they overcome their problem of not being able to see.

Sweet. Where on your body is that? It's very cool. And freaky too... wierd how dreams are like that. ~TR~

Julius...that is an interesting design....at first i thought the hands were two open snake mouths facing each other....i think you've got an optical illusion there!

Well, in that case, I have two dragons already, so, I suppose I have two herp related tats. ;)

Thanks for the compliments on mine. I have this thing about tats. It's MY body. It has to be MY art. But that's just me...I don't hang anything on my walls unless I painted or photographed it either. Weird I guess. I still can't figure out if it's because I like my own work or I'm just too cheap to buy other people's stuff lol.

if it were me, i'd get a cool shot of a snake (or whatever you like) in it's natural habitat. Have the artist then reconstruct that in the form of a partial sleeve. I did something similar for my partial sleeve. cheers,
MIKE
ps... mine though is a painting done by a greek tragedian from the year 467BC.

I will be getting a tribal design with snakes twisting around it on my lower back. Very vine like, but I still need to find an artist to design it. I belive i have found one, so come christmas time it should be on me:)

My tat isn't herp related (cetic knot) BUT it is a custom job. I found that if you go to a reputable artist they are more than happy to draw something to your specifications. If you have a drawing you want done, bring it in and a reputable artist will tell you if it will look good when finished and modify it so that it does! Takes longer and sometimes costs more, but well worth the extra effort!

I have a Ball Python that starts on the top of my foot and wraps around my leg till just below my knee. Jason H did it. It looks great....some of you have seen it I am sure. I also have a Giant Day gecko on the top of my foot on the same leg. My others are not herp related. My whole uper right arm has a dreamcatcher with feathers that hang down to my elbow. There is a black horse running through the center of it with a sunset in the background. It is my Fav! Jason did it too. I also have a Lion head on my right sholder blade. More to come...FOR SURE!! Jason??? got time????? LOL :P

All I can say is don't get flash!!! Any real artist IMHO won't even tattoo it on you. They should MAYBE use some Flash as inspiration to draw up something orginal & thats it. I was in Camp in the bush one time & there was 3 guys with the same Tattoo's, all from different artists, but obviously done from the same bulk Flash that they hand out with beginner kits. You are an individual (I assume?) & a tattoo is a very personal, lifetime thing. I'm just in the process of starting to get inked myself (this Friday is round 2 WOO HOO!) & I waited 20 years to do so. When I was 15-16 I hung out with a "rough crowd" & had a few "artists" as friends. I passed on a Sh1tload of free work throughout my teenage years & early 20's & was glad I did. I saw lots of guys "scarred for life" IMO. Even the guys that got decent work got screwed as the quality of the ink became quite apparrant over the years. Not to mention the few that got Hepititus (sp.) If it is not a licensed business with all the proper health inspections etc. I would strongly suggest elsewhere. Bleach does not substitute an ottoclave (sp.). Make sure you see the artists work also. Not just drawings & flash, but actual pics etc. of work in skin. Take your time & shop around. There are way too many crappy tats out there already, get yourself some real art, you only have 1 canvas LOL Mark I.

When I decided to finally get my snake tattoo, I couldn't decide on what species to get since I like a lot of different types of snakes. I decided to go with a skeleton of a python/boa. The original design was to wrap from hip (skull) to ankle (tail) but I backed off a bit and my tattoo artist freaked when I showed him a drawing of it. He said it was worse than Celtic Knots. The compromise was from knee to the top of my thigh and it's still not shaded. It'll probably take another 15-20 hours of work to shade the hundreds of vertebrae/ribs. It took 15 hours just to get the outline done and I had a very experienced artist. One of these days, I'll find someone to finish it for me since my original artist left town and I haven't found someone else that I trust enough to complete the shading.

Ok, enough about me... As far as an idea for your vine and snake- how about an eyelash viper? Or did you have a specific species of snake in mind...

ohh_kristina
11-05-03, 09:06 PM
the skeleton idea is a really good one! You should get it finished. I have thought about an eye lash viper or a bush viper. Right now I've decided to go with a 3/4 sleeve of autumn leaves. The colors will fade in and out of red, orange, brown, and green..all different shades. The other arm is still up for grabs, and but I'm pretty certain that I'm going to be doing something snake/habitat related.

One of these weeks/months/years, I'll find someone who can finish my tat and be done with it. It's still nice, even without the shading. I'd originally thought about just shading it black, but now I want it done in black and white ink...

Oh, how about a Copperhead nestled in the leaves? Just the head peeking out?? Where's my pen...

Wow there are a lot of great ideas/tats out there. I especially liked the one of the two hands and the eye. If I were to get one I would get either a ATB or GTP going down my tri, or a maple leaf (I know you all are thinking how oringinal) made of ice with the main vein a young red GTP(center back). Hard to explain but I'll try and and post a pic of my drawing.
Sorry if this got posted twice it dissapeared the first time I was writing it

do you guys think tattoos hurt? its weird how some people say they hurt like hell and some people say they barely feel it. ive never had one but i would like to know what it feels like

It probably really depends on your pain tolerance Clarke -- I have little doubt that I'll probably pass out when I get mine done -- lol. That's ok though ;)

There's certainly some great ideas on here, good thread! :D As soon as I get a cool design dreamed up, I'll be getting my first... can't wait :)

A lot of it depends on where on your body you get a tattoo. I find anywhere bone is near the skin hurts. Fleshy parts of the body, like upper arms, aren't bad at all. It's mainly a burning sensation. I've got a few, some of them large, and they all hurt . It's a passing thing and your body produces endorphins after a few minutes.

AshleyL
11-06-03, 08:30 AM
For me it felt essentially like being scraped....it hurt like HELL at times, but most times it was a little more than uncomfortable. Afterwards it felt like a bad sunburn when something brushed againt it and a bruise if I bumped it. Not mad at all. I also found that the better the artist, the less pain/scabbing you get afterwards. Friends of mine developped full scabs, whereas since I went to a very reputable studio, I had little to no scabbing, which was awesome!

I found that it hurts on the stomach, sides of torso and anywhere near bone. When it went over my spine, I could feel the vibration in my skull! Very strange sensation!
