Does anyone know if eastern box turtles are legal to keep in ontario? If they are would anyone know of a breeder I could contact?

Thanks,

I thought they were illegal since they have been found in the Point Pelee area, that make them native wildlife and illegal to keep in Ontario. But it is a fine line, from what I can remember the sightings have been few and far between, with no records of breeding here

It's legal to keep boxies...

The reported sightings are just that and that does not make it native. I haven't heard of a boxie sighting is a while. I mean, RES are in Ontario and I am sure they are reproducing, but that doesn't mean they are protected becasuse they were introduced and have started reproducing. Does that make sense? :)

Anyway, I believe it's restricted to export boxies from the US, b/c it is protected - correct me if I am wrong.

Cheers,
JJ ;)

Your probably right, though I think the boxie sightings are different, at least the ones on the southern tip of ontario, since those are likely of turtles coming north of their normal range, not escaped pets

If the box turtle sightings in Point Pelee are from migrations from the northern part of their range then they must be damn good swimmers since lake erie is kinda in the way. All the info that I have seen is that eastern boxies are native but rare in my area. The actual range is miniscule but it exists. I would give anything to see one in the field.
