well my friend and I were out herping yesterday for a good 4 hours. We came to this huge lake and we found a TON of bullfrogs. We catch over 20 easilly but let alot of them back. I have around 10 little ones and one HUGE one. We are going back monday to try and catch a male Bullfrog if anyone can tell me this one is DEFIANTELY a female. Here are the pics

Hey I just caught another. Well it isnt a bull, but a toad. Its a tiny bit bigger. Oh and if anyone owns any bull frogs could you post a picture of it?? And some info on breeding them. I do know that ear size is how you tell sexes. Males are bigger, females smaller.

Why would you want to breed them? Aren't there hundreds upon hundreds of them everywhere? I know there were when I lived in California. It's not like you'll be able to sell them, and I am not too sure how captive bred babies would fair in the wild.

I am also sure they need fairly large set ups as they like swimming in deeper water. I have no idea how you can provide enough space for 10 Bullfrogs. You'd need a *huge* pond and land area with deep water if you want to sucessfully keep that many.

Why not just buy a frog that is easily cared for in captivity and not found in the hundreds at every local pond?

Snakemann, unless you have a permit, it's illegal to capture native species of animals in PA. The frog and toad population is declining at a shocking rate and we really need to let them be undisturbed as much as possible during these lovely hot nights when they should be busy spawning and not recovering from the stress of nearby humans.

Captive bred frogs are inexpensive and tend to breed better than a poor stressed animal ripped out of its own environment so there's no real reason to disturb the native population unless you need to introduce a new bloodline to captive breeding stock.

Why do you want breeding experience with bullfrogs? It doesn't make any sense. If you want a little breeding project then you need a little money to buy captive animals. Not to mention no one is going to buy bullfrogs. Especially illegally caught ones.

And I gave you the information you asked for! They need VERY large enclosures, massive amounts of food, and breeding is fairly difficult in captivity.

AND YES THEY ARE ILLEGAL! You CANNOT take things from the wild in your area ESPECIALLY FROGS!. Eyespy already explained that to you. Do you need it explained again, slower?

Well in either case, you A. need a fishing license and B. You are really OUT THERE if you think you are getting "experience" by breeding BULLFROGS. Its so comical its making me laugh.

Not to mention you cannot possibly give 10 bullfrogs the space tehy need. ONE full grown bullfrog takes over 20 gallons of water space.

So why not show us the 200 gallon setup you will be housing them in? I will be happy to see a photo.

There was an article in September's (2003) Reptiles magazine about bullfrogs (pg 30). If you haven't already, I would suggest you read it. If they don't have enough room (20 gallon MINIMUM for ONE bullfrog), they will jump into the side of the glass, which will cause rostral abrasions.
It sounds sad to me to pull a wild animal out of it's huge lake and make it live in a 20 gallon aquarium. :(

I know that in Canada it is illegal to pocess more then a certain amount of any frog and someone recently was charged a hefty fine for pocessing 100 bullfrogs.. Anyway, thread closed, lets try and be civil guys :/
