I have noticed a few people who show banned in their level space. What does one do to be banned from an Internet forum? Just seems illogical to me.

haha you must have missed out on quite a few of the visitors we have had here. *lol* Very eays to get banned if you cuss people out and have no regard for anyone else.

:D I honestly don't think to many have been banned though. But then again, not sure.

Some things that will get you banned: personal attacks, improper posts, spam (ie trying to recruit people for another forum, selling non herp related goods), pissing off Jeff, posting improper material, etc.

addendum: I'm just speaking from observations, not from personal experience. :)

Yeah I saw a few people with that too. Are they just not allowed to post or cant go on forums at all?

You can always browse the forums if you don't sign on. Don't know if banned people can browse though.

Banned people can still browse if they log out of there banned account unless they ban their Ip

Matt_K

is that from experience Bryce?? LOL.. joking dude.. I believe that once banned you can still browse, but i think if you try and log on it locks up at the 'you've been banned' page :D

People are banned because they dont comply to the rules that are implemented to keep the forums running smoothly and free of arguments and other nonsense that isnt needed. If you leave your forums unmoderated or just delete problem posts, your really not doing anything to fix a problem, your just patching it up. You remove the parasite from the host and the host will thrive, so to speak. ;)

Yes as a matter of a fact I have been banned on other boards.... for basicly explaining to a mod the fact that his hummer Was a overhyped P.O.S. I even did it kindly but He knew I was Completely right and had to defend himself but he couldnt prove what I had said was wrong so it was his only option....

heh ya its not a good idea to piss of moerators. cuz unfortionly as far as your opinon getting out on that particular forum there the dictators. altho it kinda sucks though cuz i was once attaked by a moderator and he started dissing me and junk. so when i decited to defend myself by throwing at him exactly what he through to me i was kicked out off for a wile. but as long as you dont go out of your way to piss anyone off the moderators are very understanding and are just trying to keep pease umong there people.

The moderators are great people guys, and they're only doing their job to keep this site a friendly place for everyone to share their ideas and get information.

When certain people bring negativity to the forums, they do a great job stomping it out....*applauds*

(I'm not sucking up I swear  ;) )

What is illogical about removing a member that is being a highly dysfunctional member and causing a lot of problems and creating an unfriendly environment?

Well the mods here at sSnakeSs.com are the furthest thing from that. We keep our personal feelings out of it, and everyone is given ample chance to change what they are doing that threatens their posting priveleges on the site. Also, for the most part when a member is banned it is not the decision of one mod or admin, but a team decision ;)

Well, internet forums by nature are a bastion for free exchange of opinions and ideas. The idea of banning someone because what they are saying is unpopular or problematic just seems contradictory to the purpose of a forum.

Linds
07-13-03, 10:24 AM
Forums are for discussion, free change of ideas, sharing, etc. We are a community, and we do not ban people for saying unpopular things, but we do ban people for harassment, flaming, etc. Why should a friendly community such as sSnakeSs have to put up with people that only want to cause others problems. Not only is this unproductive, but it also impacts the community as whole. If people do not agree and wish to abide by the set TOS (this is viewed before registration), which is very fair, then they will deal with the consequences. Also another point, this IS a family rated site, so we cannot have swearing or any adult content due to young or sensitive members.

Leo-Land

Um.. Then why did Trace delete my thread when I proved that Vegetarians are just cold-blooded killers themselves by supports the mass slaughter of BILLIONS of defenseless field animals during harvest of the food they eat? Geeze.. She even admitted to being a Forum Nazi in a PM. What's up with that?!

Zoe
07-13-03, 12:01 PM
Because though you have the right to express yourself, OTHERS have the right not be insulted, harassed, insulted, etc.

Leo-Land
07-13-03, 12:03 PM
you said insulted twice.. she was pushing her views on us, so I pushed mine back.. Nothing wrong with that.

SCReptiles
07-13-03, 12:52 PM
Yeah, I don’t think I can support the banning of anyone from a message board. I mean this is the internet. If you are offended by something, skip over it. No one can be physically harmed and if they are harassed they chose to be because they voluntary read what was written. Statements like: “…but we do ban people for harassment, flaming, etc. Why should a friendly community such as sSnakeSs have to put up with people that only want to cause others problems. Not only is this unproductive, but it also impacts the community as whole…” simply wraps censorship in a more attractive package.

SCReptiles makes a great point. But you gotta remember SC, these boards are run by canadians. Us Americans are too used to our crazy rights like freedom of speech.

Matt_K
07-13-03, 01:35 PM
Being Canadian has nothing to do with it. For Instance, AOL has a set of Terms Of Service (TOS) rules that their Thousands upon thousands of members must abide by or their accounts get suspended and in some cases canceled. Our TOS rules are set and we expect our members to abide by them. If you read them over, they're really not that bad. SCreptiles, i see where you are coming from, but if someone was verbally attacking you on our forums, would you want everyone reading it? Or would you rather that one of our Moderators took down? We dont ban people at the drop of a dime, there is a process that is followed. Any member that breaks the TOS is given a warning, if they continue to break it, then it results in a temperary down time or a full out Ban. We're not going through the forums looking for the next person to ban. We all enjoy reading everyone's posts and taking part in threads with everyone. This is infact a family site so really, there is no place for the few people who come here just to tell someone else that their questions are crap and then proceed to put them down because of what they ask.. Or the people that come here just to cause flame wars, and i think we're a great community because of it!!.

SCReptiles

I would defend myself, no one else needed. =)

marisa
07-13-03, 02:45 PM
Is it not obvious that a member who signs up and does nothing but use cuss words be banned?

Or (which has happened on another forum) when I new member comes on and does nothing but PM people rude insults?

I see no reason people like this should be allowed to continue using a particular forum, and it has nothing to do with "rights" it has to do with not wanting a board full of jerks, people cussing and using the forum for fun.

You can call it a message board if you wish, but to most of us this is a community. When members of the community are hurt continuously by someone they will be removed regardless of who feels it should not happen. People have the right to say whatever they wish your right, but if they want to bring negativity to our community they will be asked to stop, if they continue they will be asked again, and again and then they will be removed. There are a ton of other places to post that are unmoderated and if thats a persons cup of tea then they can post there. This has always been a community atmosphere and it continue to be so. We have a very small list of about 5 people who have been banned, just some have continued to register under various aliases and then eventually have there IP banned. We ban people as a last resort. But as long as people dont know how to be civil, people will always be banned. Period.

man i have nightmares about being banned off of sites i go to....and it goes like i see somthing i post that i dont remember posting and then my mom hears about it and she takes my computer away and then i wake up and check the computer room, and yeah the moderators are really pretty cool, you just dont want to get on their bad sides, but that is hard to do

Matt_K

Jeff_Favelle
07-13-03, 03:33 PM
I agree with ********. Being banned is not about arguing. Its not about providing facts in a debate. Its also not about discussing the nuances of reptile keeping with others. Being banned is when you try to make it personal and petty. Name-calling, yelling, off-topic slander, etc etc. That's what gets people banned. Why? Because there's no need for that crap here. This place runs more smoothly than any other community with 2,000+ member that I know of. And the reason is because the riff-raff is weeded out.

Never said I didn’t like it here. Fact is the this is the best and most user friendly message board I have ever seen. I like it here very much. I asked this question to gain general knowledge, your staff provided the info that opinions are not censored, then mine was. I thought it a touch hypocritical. Don’t you?

I dont know who deleted your post and in fact your post shouldnt have been deleted unless it was a personal attack, etc... In fact nothing is supposed to be deleted period... Its to be moved to another forum. We ban, kick, move threads etc for our members, not for our own personal gain etc. The same treatment would be taken if you were being attacked by another member of the forums. If someone calls me ugly or says my snakes harbor parasites (examples) or whatever it may be, they are not banned... Really i could care less. But if there are problems in the community involving members of the site regardless of my relationship with them, they will be delt with and the action that will be taken is relative to the problem at hand discussed by our team of moderators. If you post was erased Chuck, I will be check the logs and see who deleted it and ask them why it was deleted. The point is our team does the best job they can to bring you the best and most user friendly enviroment for you to share your knowledge / experiences without the negativity and other BS that forums online are filled with. We are human and we do the best we can, if thats not good enough then theres not much more we can do!! ;)

I am thick skinned, don’t think there is anything that anyone could say that would offend me or hurt my feelings. =) I did say they were being ridiculous, sure that is why it was deleted. I just couldn’t believe anyone would complain that people were giving free pub to their business, any one wishing to use our symbol, feel free. We want all the pub we can get.
