Hey folks,
Thought I'd share this little recipe I make up for my bird and rats. Quick, cheap and easy, high protein and freezer storable.
1 cup - white navy beans
1 cup - red lentils
1 cup - split green peas
1 cup - chick peas
1 cup - uncooked wild rice (not instant rice)
1 - small onion
1 tbsp - dry chicken soup mix (low salt)
4 large carrots
all beans, lentils and peas are dry goods, not canned
don't soak anything of the beans.
Add all beans/peas into a pot of boiling water. Cook for one hour.
Add the wild rice, chicken stock and onion
cook for another 15 minutes, turn off heat.
Cut carrots into small pieces and add to the mix. Don't continue to cook mixture once carrots are added. You want the beans and carrots to be crunchy.
Let cool, drain excess fluid and put mixture into freezer safe zip lock bags. I put 2-3 ladles in each bag. Then store in freezer. you should end up with about 6 -7 bags worth. When you need it just take it out of the freezer and defrost to room temp and serve.
I give this mix to my Timneh Grey Parrot daily and to the rats on the day before cage cleanings. They all love it.
Heck if you run out of KD you can always eat it yourself..;)
Enjoy
Jim
