View Full Version : BRB's in melamine enclosures?

I'm interested in getting a 1.2 trio of BRB's but I just had new 4-cage tower melamine cage made. The cage is great but expensive. I want to be able to keep BRB's but I was told that the humidity that they need would warp the wood in the melamine and shorten the cage's lifespan. I'm sure I can use aquarium sealant but that would defeat the purpose of the moveable panels I had designed to change the size of the enclosures on each shelf. I thought about just putting a rubbermade box in an enclosure, fill it with wet moss and cut a hole in the lid. Will this do for BRB sub-adults? And when they do become adults, how much humidity do they need?
Thanks
Melamine is mostly just water-resistant. It is still not COMPLETELY waterproof, though the high quality stuff is fairly good. But even the high quality stuff, unless you seal all the seams and edges properly with silcone will warp, blister, disintegrate and all that fun stuff. Babies should be kept near 100% humidity as possible, while adults should be kept aorund 80%. With adults you could let it drop down a little lower than 80% and provide humdity boxes for them, but it wouldn't suffice with babies. They need the high ambient humdity as well as the more concentrated humidity in the hides. Sub-adults can also be kept at around 80% humidity as well. But they cannot have the low ambient humdity with just a humid hide, it is important for BRB's of all ages to have a high ambient humidity.
When ya get a chance I would love to see pics of that new tower you have built :)

I appreciate the info Linds.
Since I'm new to this forum, I'm still figuring out how to use it. Heck, it took me a while to figure out how to post a pic at Kingsnake.com. This forum seems a bit more complicated. I will definitely post as soon as I can!!
;)
Posting pics is the same here as on kingsnake.com, it is actually even easier if you only have one pic 'cause you can simply attach it :)
Pics: < img src="URL of your pic">
Attachments: In the new message area, underneath the body of your message, you will find a box that says attachment, beside that click on browse, choose the file you want, click ok :) No need to have it hosted as it just take it right off your computer :)

Hey Linds!
So nice to have the day off and check this & Kingsnake forums at my whim to chat snakes.
Well, I did try doing an attachment but it didn't work when I would preview my post. I click on 'browse' then I pull the pic from my C: drive, I click "Open" and think it's all posted. Before I submit, I preview and still nothing!
