Alberta Reptile Laws

I had been researching Asian Water Monitors in hopes of being able to get one possibly.Then I was informed, (in the lizard forum) that living in Calgary I wasn't able to legally own one.I can't remember off hand who told me, and I apologize for that, but I was wondering if there is any one particular source that one can use for finding out what you can and cannot keep, based on where you live. :confused: Thanks

hrmm I duno exactly where to look but you could try by searching any government based webpages? I did find info once on the canadian government websites regarding inporting and exporting animals. I duno try doing a search or try contacting a local government office and start asking around :) not goverment but municiple... sorry for the confusion

Yeah, that was about the only place I could think of, I just thought there would be a more practical way without searching through obscurities first. Thanks for the input though, much obliged.

Call city hall, it doesnt matter what bylaws are preset by the province, it is the municipal bylaws that have the final word (ie- it is legal to keep venomous species in ON, but find a municipality that will allow you is the tricky part). You can pick up a copy of what is allowed and what isn't.

Unfortuneatly,:mad: the answer wasn't what I wanted to know as it turns out. Any monitor that I would want to keep, I CAN'T HAVE.

If an animal is "controlled", what does that mean? Does that mean they come and feed it for you? You know, keep things under control?

all the cool newts are CONTROLLED!!! that sucks bigtime! WHY would a marbled salamander be controlled? or a great crested newt!!

Most of the controlled animals are listed for obvious reasons - venomous, large, dangerous, etc (not that responsible and intelligent people cannot house them correctly and safely - but let's face it - there's some really stupid people out there).

Others are listed because they may pose a threat if released to our native species. I'm not sure if it's true - but I heard the reason some water turtles are illegal to own in Alberta without a grandfathered permit was that the males would kill the native Alberta male turtles and breed with the females. Don't quote me on that though. But, maybe the salamanders are a threat to native ones in some way.

There is one group in the States working with Fish & Wildlife to create a permit system to control animals with very specific care requirements (such as chameleons) as well. Personally, I don't think it will fly - costs, time and the reaction of average hobbyists will be prohibitive.

Sorry Jeff ... thought you were joking! ;o) It basically means you cannot own one without a permit from Fish & Wildlife. You cannot sell one to someone else unless they also possess a permit.

I've never actually tried to get a permit - so I don't know how difficult it is. I know of someone getting one to rescue a beaten, starved burm or for those that run zoos... Maybe someone else has more information.

I am under the understanding that it is up to a $50,000 fine and/or jail time if caught with an illegal animal. Correct me if I'm wrong!!

all you have to do is call them and they well tell you to go in and fill out paper work and the big qustion is why would you be better to take care of the reptile better then most people.i have mine for rescue reasons any ways and some weeks later they will let you know if u have it or now
