2 nights ago I left "NumNum" my parrot outside in his cage. I leave his cage on the deck in the summer so he can enjoy the fresh air. I had just bought him a new toy for his cage that night too. I guess a cat somehow managed to grab him during the night through the bars... I didn't think they were wide enough for an animal to reach in. My mum woke me up at 6 in the morning saying that my bird looked like it had been attacked. I rushed out to see him and there was feathers all over the place and NumNum was lying on the bottom of the cage still alive. I opened the cage and put my hand near him and he kinda stumbled and hobbled over and sat on my hand. One leg had been ripped out of his body and a chunk of him was missing where his leg was attached to his body. My heart just sank. I stroked him on his head and he made a whimpering kinda sound. NumNum was very attached to me and would only come to me. I didn't want him to suffer any longer. I had to hold him under the water in a bucket for half a minute until he was gone. His eyes were open when I took him out of the water so I shut them with my fingers. I wanted to cry but it just wouldn't come out... I still want to but it just doesn't happen. I just hate to think what was going on in his little mind when he realised that the person that he had bonded to was the one that ended his life. I can honestly say this was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I wish that ******* cat had finished him off instead of me having to.

I miss my little Birdy NumNum. Rest in peace little buddy :(

Baz, that story breaks my heart. I'm so sorry to hear of it. On a lighter note, I must say that it is cool to see that someone else out there knows their classic Peter Sellers films.

Hope you recover soon.

What a sad story Baz. Sorry for your loss, and more sorry for the way it had to end. It is difficult letting creatures go, but this was a true test of spirit.

So sorry to hear about your little guy :( Try to remember that accidents do happen, and try not to blame yourself! I know its hard not to though... everytime an animal dies I can't help but blame myself, even though it isn't my fault :(

Can't really blame yourself. Stuff happens.. Tragic but it happens. Obviously you wouldn't have put it outside if you knew something like this was going to happen, and like you said, you've done it before. Nothing you could have done. Nice looking bird, you did a very nice job with him obviously. Sorry to hear what happend though. hang in there,

Then he wouldn't have ever enjoyed fresh air and different sights.
You can't know when it's their time to go.

Oh Baz, my heart goes out to you. I have a little special needs cockatiel and I can't imagine being with out him. :(
You may feel bad for having to put your little one down but I'm sure he was thinking you were wonderful for being there in his last moments and taking away his pain. There was really nothing more you could do. Take care, the best you can do in this situation to make good out of it, is to get the message out there and warn others about the potential dangers of leaving an animal out side without suporvision. I know that doesn't make you feel any better about the hole situation but if it saves one other bird or mammal, that's what counts. There is always a reason for everything. As for you not crying, be careful man, you may still be in shock. I was like that when I lost my uncle and when it came it was real bad. Take care of yourself and get those feeling out. :(

BAZ,

I just checked snakes and read your post. That is the saddest thing I've read in a long time, I really don't know what to say - but I really feel for you.

Just on Saturday, I saw a bunch of mollocun cockatoos, and macaws - at a 29 year zoo in a school that was closing. It broke my heart to realize that those birds were having to be rehomed, away from their "one person" - who they were really bonded to.

I was sad just taking some reptiles out of there, I felt like the birds knew exactly what was going on.

I hadn't realized before Saturday how close people and birds could get, I think possibly closer than dogs.

On Sunday, I was discussing how close parrots could get to people, with a herpetologist friend of mine who lives here in town.

If we were home more, I would keep parrots. I'd be afraid how close I'd get to them, however and can't imagine what I'd do if I found myself in the same situation that you were in.

BAZ,

I just recently lost my pet bird Clipper ( a Quaker ) to something that used to be so normal. This is how my stroy goes.

Clipper came to our house as us being a second owner. Sure we'd have our problems, but somehow things between myself, Clipper, and the rest of us started getting better. Clipper and his famous dance brought joy to us and he loved us laughing. Every mornin', we'd wake up and we'd let Clipper onto my brothers desk where he'd jam away and get his mornin' love. Pretty much became a routine. But, unfortunately, one mornin', Clipper woke up, danced and our dog Max instinctly jumped up and knocked lil' Clipper off. Clipper went into shock and within a minute, he passed off in my hands. I fought back the tears but I find myself missin' Clipper even though he stayed with us for a mere month. Clipper will never be forgotten and hes touched my heart and I see NumNum has touched yours.

I'm just happy to say that our birds are partyin' it up together right now and enjoying some sunflower seeds.

BAZ, my condolences because I know what its like loosin' a bird.

Thanks guys... lesson is... never put a bird or any other animal that has no way of escaping danger outside unsupervised even if you think its safe... there are too many unknown factors.

So sorry Baz. I am sure that NumNum knew just how much it hurt you to take away his pain. Birds have a sixth sense about us humans and what we're feeling. Hope you feel better soon, and know that all things happen for a reason. Take care.

Thats really too bad Baz, im sure that it was horrible to find him like that, then having to put him down must have multiplied it by a million. Maby someday you can find a new one juts like him.

PS What kind of parrot was he?

BAZ

Hi Jeff. he was a Indian Ringneck parrot. They are usually green but he was a baby blue colour.

BAZ,

My deepest condolences on the loss of NumNum. He really was a beautiful bird, and I can understand how you feel. I lost my Senegal Parrot, Gilligan, to teflon poisoning, exactly one week after my boyfriend died. (my neighbours were cooking with teflon pans, and when heated past a certain point, teflon emits a poisonous gas) I wasn't able to cry for weeks. I do have to commend you for ending NumNum's pain. It shows true love if a person is willing to do that for their pet, and I am sure he would have rather gone in the hands of the person he loved, instead of a strangers.

RIP NumNum, Gone but not forgotten.

Man, I'm lost for words. All I can say is that, having to put an animal down yourself is the worst thing I can imagine doing. I've done it too many times (at the SPCA) that nowadays just a thought makes me sick in the stomach.

I hope you're feeling a tad bit better by now my friend. Take pleasure in knowing that you did the best thing for him. You gave him a good life, made him a friend and in a time of need....you helped him. Yes you did.

RIP NumNum

I'm deeply sorry for your loss and crying my eyes out reading this thread. I too lost a bird to a horrible accident and even though it was 2 years ago the pain is still pretty fresh.

Saffron was a dark-eyed yellow clearwing budgie that spoke a few words and phrases and absolutely adored me. She used to fly to my shoulder all the time to croon a few choice words in my ear. Something like "Crikey, love you pickle ******* hello Saffron" was her usual phraseology. She used to stand on my collar with her head behind my ear and one foot twined in my hair.

One day I thought that was what she was doing and sat down in my wheelchair. It turned out she was hanging upside down from my collar and her neck was broken against the handle of the chair as I sat.

I've finally forgiven myself for the accident itself but I don't think I'll ever stop missing my small sweet yellow Peep of a budgie. Don't beat yourself up for your own mistake, try to focus on the bond you and NumNum shared rather than the cause of death. He was happy and adored and you gave him a very good life.
