A Raytek MT2 or MT4 thermometer gun

I use an Actron Temperature Gun. Cost me about $160 from Crappy Tire. Well worth the investment ;)

If you don't want to invest that much money right now then you can get a good digital thermometer/hygrometer with remote probe from Radio Shack or wherever for about $15-$20 :)

you can pick one of those digital therms from home depot for about 10 dollars. They work perfectly.

Digital all the way. I've never seen them as cheap as $10, but Radio Scraps has great ones ranging from $20 all the way up to $50. However, unless you are building an incubator, there is really no need to be accurate to within a degree, so the $10 ones should be just fine. Most slitheries will be quite forgiving up to several degrees variation from "ideal".

We have a couple digital thermometers plus a couple analog (dial) thermometers. I find they're all pretty close.

The stick on dial thermometers you buy at pet stores only measure the ambient temp, you cannot measure surface temps with them. Not sure how accurate they are either...
