View Full Version : rock python
hello im have a gopher snake but fell in love with what at a local pet store was advertised as a Amazon Rock Python i have very little experiance with snakes and have had mine only a month i just wanted to ask what kind of pets these rock pythons made:w
Awful ones!
Rock pythons are AGRESSIVE and get to be HUGE. They are one of the longest pythons, and in the wild can easily eat a deer, gazelle etc.
However, are you sure it wasn't AFRICAN rock python? No such thing as an amazon rock python...

Zoe is right on average Afrocks don't make good pets, I used to have 1.1 and they took a lot of work to tame down.

Unless you are ready to accept a "huge" responsibility for the next 20 years or so, stay away from the big pythons. Maybe consider a Ball, Spotted or Childrens python for a starter or maybe a Carpet species, but leave the big ones for the people who have the time, space & experience to deal with them. Mark I.
i dont like ,ball pythons maybe carpet. But youre right I dont need that big of a snake yet. Most likly ever thank everyone for there advice

Just to throw my thoughts in there, I have two AfRocks that were given to me by their owners BECAUSE they were so aggressive and hard to manage. I am one of those strange people that enjoy the challenge of keeping these giants, but as a general rule, they DO NOT make good pets. As for the one's that I have, I will never sell them, and I will never breed them (even if I aquire females in the future). This is a species that is best left for the truely dedicated ( and I do mean DEDICATED in the strongest sense of the word!)

Rock pythons are known for their aggressiveness... I know one that broke a hard thick glass when he was running after his owners...
I wouldnt keep a snake that dangerous unless you are ready to deal with this kind of temperament and its GREAT strenght.
Definitly NOT a beginner's snake...
Hi, Rock pythons have a naturally agressive disposition and even with constant handling there is no way to "Tame" these guys down. A full grown Rock python can easily take down a gazelle that can weigh more than a human and gobble it up, I wouln't recommend this species as a first time snake.
all good advise .. but in my oppinion .. the most beautiful snakes in the world :)
Its a very rewarding specie.. They have my upmost respect..
Its look was what drew me to ask. It somehow just stood out. My bggest problem is that I dont want to get a snake based on its looks that in a few years Ill wind up deciding I can't take care of. I would hate to put my responsibility on someone else's shoulder ,just because i acted on an impulse
A pet store I used to go to had a rock a few years ago. The guy that was in charge of the reptile department tried selling me that snake every time I cam in. Over a year his price went from $99 to $20. The first time I saw this rock the girl at the store handled it and it bit her. She dropped it and it latched on to my foot. This was two years ago. I was back in that store a few weeks ago. They still have this rock in a display tank. Its now ten feet of agression.
