As many of you have noticed, this hobby has been progressively moving away from common names (IE: Timer Rattlesnake) to the Latin name (IE: Crotalus Horridus). I am interested in adding a Latin help page to my www.SCReptiles.com website. I want to place a Latin dictionary explaining the terms, for example “Agkistrodon” “piscivorus” means “hooked tooth” “fish eater.” I also would like to add the Latin names in wave form, allowing users to click on the Latin term and hear the correct pronunciation. Problem is, I am not versed in Latin. I need two things. First, a type of Latin dictionary that will allow me to research the terms and file them in a user friendly internet version. And second, I need some volunteers who are well versed in the Latin names to record them in wave file and email them to me. Anyone interested in helping out can post here or email me at Chuck@SCReptiles.com. Thanks in advance for any help.

Great idea Chuck,I love it! I also like knowing the Latin names but
am sometimes frustrated because the pronunciation isn't explained. I have a book called "Reptiles,Their Latin Names Explained"...I'm pretty sure there's no pronunciation explanation though. It's not exactly a comprehensive book on the subject but if I can be of any help I'll send the explanations to you or post them if anyone else is interested in them.
Unfortunately as far as Latin pronunciations go,your more likely to find them in children's books, especially dinosaur books for kids.
Good Luck
All I know is that boa means "water snake" :)

The author of the book,"Reptiles~Their Latin Names Explained" is A.F.Gotch,published by Blandford Press...published in 1986.
I picked up my copy at Haslam's Books in the used section.
