Turtle removal proves to be less than a snap

How many tricks does it take to tackle a wayward turtle? Ask Dennis Pasket, the Stillwater police community service officer who figured out how to get a snapping turtle out of a 5-foot window well at a home near McKusick Lake earlier this month.

The turtle's shell was about 15 inches in diameter, and there was nothing to grab, so Pasket went back to the police department for a dog snare.

He tried to lasso the turtle around the neck, but his target kept disappearing.

"Every time I did that she stuck her head in," Pasket said. "It took me awhile."

Then he changed tactics.

"I worked on the tail. Their tails are pretty strong. I managed to get it (the snare) around the thicker part of the tail and I snared it."

Pasket tugged the turtle by the tail until she was out of the window well. Then he held the stick of the dog snare with both hands and started to walk the wayward reptile to the lake. About halfway there, his charge grew too heavy and he had to plop her, shell-down, on the grass to drag her the rest of the way.

Needless to say, the turtle was wide awake and snapping the whole trip, Pasket said. He placed the turtle in the lake and returned to the office to neatly summarize the trip:

"Ninja the turtle was removed from the window well."
