hi guys iam really going to get my pair of bloods and iam very excited! i will post a pic of them soon. can u guys give me some tips? they are already 5 yrs old and never been breed. hope you guys can give me some advice on bloods. i had already researching on them alot but this will be my first hands on experience with snakes. if i encountered bloods that wont each what shall i do? can i feed them chicken legs "defrost"?

If you think they eat chicken legs then you haven't done enough research. Search google.com for care sheets so they won't die on you.

Ahhhh where do I start.

Dude where ever your getting these bloods from tell them to hold awhile longer if they can with your deposit on them. Do more research on snakes in general, then pythons, after more on bloods as well. Once your done all that ask serious questions that you learned from your research to the owners of these bloods.

I mean these owners should aim to see if you can handle and understand these bloods before you get them. That to me is proper care and respect to you, the bloods and them as well.

5 year old bloods are not a pet but a real deal to understand and care for. Even my own experience was limited to only 1 female I owned till I sold her yesturday for expansion in my collection. I met her needs 100% and raised her well from a youngster and from a reputable breeder willing to sell her to me because he quized me and my knowledge and what to expect on bloods.

These 2 you want may be calm and tame but still expect them to be a handle full. If your thinking on getting these as adults for the purpose of breeding and making a few bucks, and these are your first snakes..............WOW expect some serious problems too.

I hope you do not take offense of my post on this but I think its best to open your eyes on what your getting into in respect to you and these bloods. Saying they will eat chicken legs? Wow.....do more research.

5 year old bloods will eat large rats even rabbits now but leave the chicken legs for a Sunday barbaque with the family.

You can not feed bloods KFC. if you never handled a snake before WOW, you are screwed. Blood pythons don't have a good temperment. maybe you should at least catch a garter or somthing first. Blood pythons are not a starter snake. they are for people who have been dealing with snakes for a couple years AT LEAST.

Look for a corn snake or a ball python.

JD, I agree with most of what you've said (especially the screwed part, haha), but not all bloods are bad tempered. My captive bred blood and my Borneo are both as tame as ball pythons, and not as timid. But these ones may be wild caught since Melvin lives in the Phillipines. If they were wild caught as adults, well, all I can say is good luck Melvin!

hey guys thanks for some tips, as for the chicken legs i saw some zoo keepers doing this to the snakes thats why iam wondering if i can feed them chicken legs too. anyway the bloods are already 5yrs old and they came from one the best python breeder in the US, VPI ranch. i know bloods will be harder to raise and breed than any other snakes but thats the only quality animal avail here. dont know where to get quality animals as these. so what u guys think? get it or not?

hey melvin,

personally, i wouldn't get the pair.
if its your first hands on experience with snakes, then its probably a bad idea....bloods are big, and it can be quite tricky keeping them healthy.
is there a reason why you need an adult pair?
why not get a baby or two. much easier to handle, acclimate, and learn from.
Id say you'd be getting yourself into something you might not be able to handle , and it may hurt you and the snakes in the long run.

But its up to you.
your choise, make a wise one.

thanks for your suggestions guys. i will think it over again. i had been looking for quality bloods like this for a long time and i finally found a CB bloods that came from VPI, my friend raise them. age of the bloods is not a factor but thats the only quality one i could find. here you can find people selling bloods but they are all WC, i admit they are cheaper, they also comes in different sizes. and they also have beautiful colors. but i dont like WC animals because they can die easily. if i want to get quality CB animals i must import myself, importation cost alot... maybe snakes are not for me after all.....

im interested in knowing how these animals are truly VPI stock anyways,....

i know VPI will consider doing cites for international purchases if the price is right, but what does this seller have too prove they are from VPI. Does he have papers? etc...or are you just going by word of mouth.

Please excuse me, as i have no clue what the herp hobby is like over there.

the guy selling the snake dont have any proof that the snakes are from VPI, i had just confirm it with the previous owner of the snakes and ask tracy barker to confirm, i know the previous owner of the snakes visit the snakes every once in a while, he has a good reputation here, he sold the snakes because of some chinese fung soi "belief". the person selling the bloods now also earn a good reputation, he had already breed blue tongue skinks,boa constrictor and hopefully some ball pythons "waiting to be hatch". i know he is selling the bloods again because he will concentrate on burmese and he need space.

i forgot to tell you last time he already want to sell the bloods to me but he backed out on some reason and now he is selling it again due to lack of space.

any sugestion are welcome, i also want to see your point of view about this situation.

Why would you say that? Maybe it would just be a better idea to ease into the hobby with something that is easier to gain experience with than something that is better left to keepers with some experience. I wouldn't go to the extent of giving up alotgether before you even get into it. If you started off with something a little easier you would be able to get the necessary coinfidence and experience to keep those bloods you have been after. It would work out better for all parties involved ;)

ok i will think about getting starter snakes first.. thank u guys for participating. hope i can get quality bloods on the future, you guys are lucky on your side. its much easier to find quality reptile there.
