Brad,
Well, as for moss, go as deep into the woods as possible to get the "cleanest" of mosses. What i mean by this is that the moss will be cleaner of herbicides and any human contact period.
I don't know how you would go about lessening the amount of insects on moss, but other plants you can wash all the dirt off them, and then wash it in mildly soapy (dishsoap) water (do not wash the roots, just the foliage...turn it upside down and stir it around the water) and rinse well and plant in topsoil (not potting soil, it has undesirable additives in it).
To lessen the amounts of bugs in the moss, I have done the following things. First, shake the moss of the bugs like you would dust a carpet. The larger ones will literally fall out. Dont toss it around too too much for the fact that it will break. Secondly, I drown my moss in de-chlorinated water for a day ( 24 hours ). This just kills the bugs. I've never really came across any problems with bugs with moss after I've done this. You can always sort through the moss and pick bugs out. Gets tideous though.
I have heard that most mushrooms are fine, there are many many many types though.
Just dont use the MaGiC ones!
