First Breeding Snakes

Hey all, my Birthday's coming up and I'm looking into buying a pair of snakes. Im getting interested in breeding and am looking for an easy breeding starter snake. I was considering corns but I wanted to get a little more feedback from these forums. Requirements - Stays fairly small, Reletively cheap, Easy to care for. Thanks a lot guys.

You picked it!! Corns would be great. If that doesn't work for you interest wise then cal kings.

Corns and various kings are great - easy to deal with and breed readily. Some of the milk snake varieties are just as great, but maybe a bit more reclusive. Likely the best way to decide is to spend some time with the various species and get to know what characteristics you like in a snake - for personality, amount of care required and looks. One of the great things about corns is the color variation and the amount that is known about the genetics - there is enough with that species to occupy someone for their whole life if they are keen on genetics of color. But the personality of ball pythons might appeal to you more. Best advice I ever got from these forums was to choose species you really like to work with and get pleasure from having around because there is lots of work and worry to breeding - and it will be more fun if you are working with a species you like.

Thanks a lot Mary and Reptile_Gallery! I think Im gunna go with corns. I havn't owned any yet, but I have heard nothing but good things about them. I would love to breed BPs but I am so sick and tired of they're stubbornness when it comes to feeding. Fasting is really frustrating and I would hate to have 4 more babies to worry about when they don't eat. I will also be breeding mine and a friend of mine's IJs next season. The pair we are getting are proven so hopefully that should ease up some draw backs. Thanks for the help and Ill keep you guys posted on the breeding. :)

Best of luck with the new corns - looking forward to photos of them so we can see what colors you got. Be prepared for the fact that they have a higher metabolic rate than ball pythons and irians and they defecate a lot more frequently and are a lot more active when you are handling them - wiggly little guys.

I personally can't say enough good about Irians too - they are wonderful snakes and I would be breeding them if circumstances were different.

Rosies or sand boas are a good choice too, no eggs to incubate either.

If you're looking for something a little different, you might want to consider African House snakes. Don't have to brumate them and they breed very readily. Incubation of eggs is similar to corns.

I really enjoy their dispositions. they act like little pythons.

I can't attach a link but do a search on google for African House Snakes. Also there's a Yahoo African House snake group.

I don't have any hatchlings available yet- though the pair I've got laid within a month of me getting them (still hopeful about the eggs, though most of them in this batch appear to be infertile). They've started breeding again, so soon! They are neat little snakes.
