HEY!!!

I just got my first snake, (ball python) about a year ago and I just found this site. Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm 23 live in los angeles with my snake miss priss and my two pit bulls. I have been reading up a lot on ball's and have learned a lot in the past 6 months. I haven't handled miss priss in about 2 months. I know it sounds stupid but I am a little weary about getting back into the swing of handling her everyday. Any suggestions?

Welcome to ssnakess.com. I just got my first ball python 3 weeks ago. I'm enjoying him very much. About the handling problem I can't say. I don't know enough about snakes yet to be able to dispense any accurate advice.

Welcome to the forums!!

Hi and Welcome,

IMO...Just go in and grab him, then support the body, and let him slither around on ya.

Just make sure he is not starting a shed, and that you do not smell like a rat. lol.

Even if it did bit you, it wouldent hurt that much, and all the fuss would be over with.

Cheers

Agreed. The first time I handled a snake, I actually wanted to get bitten. I knew it wouldn't hurt, but physchologically this bite was going to kill! Soon as I got bitten, I just thought to myself "wow, thats it?" It's really nothing, just stick your hand in and grab the snake as asphyxia suggested.

i dont think bitting will be a big problem. has he ever bitten you before? most Captive breed ball pythons are quite tame and docile by nature so i wouldnt be too woried on that aspect of it. but it is still a good idea to handle them so then they learn it trust you more and in turn if you have any doubts you will learn to trust your snake more. what is he currently feeding on and is it live are dead when you feed it? that is a very common mistake that people do when they first get into snakes and ill admit i made it too. when you talk to most guys at the pet store they will just imply that you buy a live mouse or rat throw it in the cage and let the python do the rest himself right? wrong! yes the snake CAN take care of himself if need be but in a captive situation there is no good reson for it. a snake could get bit by the prey anamal and bites from rats can easly get infected and kill the snake also buying frozen prey in bulk is MUCH cheeper then from the pet store and more convenent and will stop my rant no because i dont even know whether your snake is even eating live prey at all but if you need help with feeding dead or switching him over dont hesetate to ask!

Yes, she's doing fine. I thought my humidity was off a bit but she just shed in one peice so I guess everything is fine. I have started to handle her again but only when she is out and active. I dont know why I am such a pansy, she's a sweet bp

Hello young lady, welcome on board. My main interest is in North American pit vipers, but I also know a little about large pythons. Let me know if I can ever help you. My first exotic snake was also a ball!
