View Full Version : My carpet swallowed a rooster
We were looking for something bigger than rats and cavy's to feed my biggest carpet python "boof head" so we picked up a full grown rooster. It took the fat old bugga about an hour to catch it and another hour to swallow it but he's a happy lil guy now.
I couldnt believe the size of the lump in his gut so we took some photos, just thought we would share them with you.

Yeah a rooster couldve easily slashed it with its feet if im right. But yeah thats one MASSIVE head, ecspecially for a male. I think those pics have motivated me to buy one in a few years. THANKS you just added another owner to the JCP list:) Well in the future sometime for sure
THANKS you just added another owner to the JCP list
Thats a Queensland Coastal Carpet Python. not JCP These get MUCH bigger. My male "Shag" is a little over 8' and just turned 2 yrs old. Right now Shag eats colosal rats. Next will be small bunnies. I get Bunnies $1.00 a pound frozen (nothing in my house eats live, other than insects) and they are all about 1-1.5 pound so perfect for my Boas and soon Shag.
Ed r: damn man.... 2 years old and 8 feet???
Is that about normal for most coastals? I was under the impression it would take 3 to 4 years to reach that size.... but then again mine is about 4 feet and will be a year old in July.
Yeah actually the first 2-3 years they are like weeds. Mine is a major hog. I have to limit him otherwise he would eat more. He gets one colosal rat a week. He was an adoption, and from what I heard the previous owner was doing the gorge/stave feeding schedule with him. Feed 3-4 large rats every 3-4 weeks. It evens out in the end I'm sure. I just don't want him to be hungry, he has a "questionable" personality as it is.lol

Is it just me or is that lump way to big. Don't you think he will have problems digesting that? I'm pretty sure the food for the snake isn't supposed to be bigger than the thickest part of the snake. Unless your snake is different. I don't know???

I was thinking that also. Plus poultry really doesnt do much for a snake. Except cause it to have one nasty poo.!!!!!!!!

stretch, I hate to answer for Mudboy, but you've obviously never seen a Carpet with a meal in its belly. Carpets are REALLY slender pythons that eat surprisingly large meals right out of the egg. That picture is totally normal for a Carpet after a normal ----> large meal.

Very cool either way. The snake is very beautiful and looks very well looked after! Its a testament to its keeper imo! :D

Capets are fine with big meals. That snake will be fine.
Those pics are great mud!!!! keep them commin!!!!
Lucas
unreal the size of meals they take.
My hatchling IJ are starting with rat pinks no problem. Fed a guinea pig to one of my jungles a few weeks ago that was huge and she took it right back. You can see how round it is. Birds are great they stretch out being eaten then shrink under the pressure of the stomach, cool.

Hi everyone,
Boof is 8 years old and is just off 12 feet but is a very heavy snake for a carpet. He will only eat live and has been that way since we got him,no I dont like it but its the way he is and he kills his food pretty much on strike. Thankyou Feff for answering that one for me and as usual you were spot on mate, if boof is due to shed or I have to go away for any time and leave him with our friend to look after I will feed him a couple of full grown ducks or a baby pig or a small kangaroo because he will only eat for me. As Jeff pointed out these guys can eat big *** prey and will kill and eat big cats, dogs, roo's and really big water birds like herons and storks. Yes you are right, chickens dont do much for the snakes weight but the fethers and soft bones give them a good protien boost and is a natural food for them in the wild and will only make messy poo's if the snake has been over fed and is rushing the digestion process to make room for new food.
Ok last one is the 2yo 8 footer, I would like to see a pic of him, not that I doubt you but with carpets as pets we tend to over feed them and they grow very quickly and makes what we call over here in Australia "pin head snakes". This leads to growth problems later in life and the scull does not develope at the same rate as the rest of the snake which limite the size of the food intake and leads to stunting. Pin head carpets stop growing at about 9 feet and are usually snappy as hell. Thankyou for your questions and your kind comments "Shane and Jeff" and I will see if I can find something else interesting for you soon.
Cheers
Rick.

Nice caret Mudboy! This is kinda off topic but what is that blue snake (cloubrid) in your phot gallery?
HAHA Just kidding
lots of people ask me about that one. Its just a blue tree snake. A back fanged venomous snake that lives local here in pretty large numbers. Snappy as hell but very beautiful.
Will post a pic but its not supposed to be here so I hope I dont get in trouble.
As I said how he is fed. the colosal rats barely make a bulge in his belly. As i also said he was an adoption and the previous owner state he was about a year and a half when I got him like 6-7 months ago. So is he really only 2 years old? I really can't prove it.
He gets one colosal rat a week. He was an adoption, and from what I heard the previous owner was doing the gorge/starve feeding schedule with him. Feed 3-4 large rats every 3-4 weeks.
Here is Shag

You'll have to copy and past the links in a new browser. Don't have all the pic loaded in my album yet.
The cage he is in is almost 4' wide.
A lovely snake Ed and one to be proude of mate, nice colour and NOT a pin head. You dont need to prove anything Ed I was just asking thats all.
Thanks for sharing the photo with us, shag is a beauty.
Cheers
Rick.
Not proving. Just want to also make sure what I'm doing is right.
I'm dead against powerfeeding, I worry I underfeed sometimes, but my snakes grow well so i don't think I am. :D
He has grown about 1 foot in the 6-7 months I have had him. He gets a huge rat and looks at me for more. He is amazingly territorial too. I went in his cage to change a bulb last night and man did he get ticked off. Striking over and over at me. lol. If you take him out of his cage he is terrible, unless your putting him in his feed tote, then he is happy. They only time he is really handleable and very calm is when he comes out of the cage on his own.
Yours is quite the looker too. Man he is big!!!
Yeah Ed they can be like that sometimes.
Does he get plenty of natural sunlight? sometimes that will help and I have a large tree branch in a bucket of cement with plastic leaves on it and if I remove a snake that is not happy about coming out I just put him in the tree for a while (in the sun if I can) and they calm right down and come down the tree for a wrestle on the floor :)
Haven't had a chance to take him out yet Weather here has barely gotten over 70 degrees, still kinda cold for him. Good idea , I'll try it. If summer ever comes.lol
yeah this weather is pretty crappy over here considering it's the middle of JUNE!!!
I can't wait till my little guy gets big.... still amazed at what he can fit in his mouth.
