Hey there, fellow herpsters. I was wondering if anyone out there has had a problem with varanid sniffles.
A little over a week ago I got an infrared light for night time heat.
Before that I'm afraid I followed the advice of a well intentioned
but misinformed pet store owner who said ambient room temp
would be fine at night since her cage wasn't getting a draft and
she sleeps in her cave.
The sniffles seemed to improve right away and I thought they
were gone. But she started leaking a little out of her nostrils today when she got in a bad mood and started huffing.
My question is, about how long does it generally take to get her
over the sniffles so that she doesn't make a turn for the worst.
Her night time temp is about 82-84degrees and similar in the day
except for her basking shelf which is about 95 degrees.
Is this warm enough? She's still small if that makes any difference in her heat requirements(21").
Thanks for any info on this subject.

Hi,
Your hot spot needs to be warmer for a monitor. Theories and opinions vary but especially with a possible respiratory infection it should be higher somewhere in the 120 - 140f range. You might also think about leaving the basking light on 24/7 untill she is well.

Just some thoughts, good luck.

You'll definately want to catch that before it moves into the lower respitory system. I'd suggest taking it to a qualified vet ASAP.

Best wishes,
