This matter is now a criminal investigation.

I don't normally like to do this sort of thing but I simply cannot sit idly by when something this horrific and unjustifiable happens - especially at a reptile show. And even more when we actually had the Reptile Rescue, Canada display there.

Yesterday a group of individuals were seen walking around the show with a 3.5ft light coloured iguana with them. Shortly thereafter, an individual came inside and approached us saying they spotted some people pitching this iguana over the fence behind the venue - into the bushes right by the rail track. These people then proceeded to walk away towards the apartment buildings behind the venue.

I went outside with this witness, hurdled the fence and sure enough the iguana was still there. I scooped her up and brought her inside - she has what appears to be a thermal burn on her neck, a thermal burn on the back thigh and previously healed burns on her back. She was exceptionally calm and friendly.

Due to a lack of funding and increased demand I simply did not have any more space available here to take in another iguana and unfortunately no one at the show was able to assist in the matter - since it was mentioned to us that it was unlikely the SPCA would do anything at that time. After talking to the SPCA this morning however, there was a lot that could have been done at the time.

Fortunately a friend of mine had made it to the show and is able to properly house the iguana and we can now begin veterinary treatment.

Cruelty to and abandonment of any animal in the region of Peel is a criminal offense. We have been in contact the Peel division of the O.S.P.C.A. (among other authorities) and this is now a criminal invesigation. If convicted and found guilty of cruelty/abandoment in Peel, individuals face:

- up to 6 months in prison
- up to $2000 in fines
- prohibition from owning or having custody or control of an animal for a given time period up to 2 years

There was an immediate witness to the disposal of the iguana itself and we would appreciate it if they could contact us again so we can forward the information to the investigators. We would also appreciate it if anyone else with any further information (since a fair amount of people at the show know or saw these people) could either contact us with this information or contact the investigating officer at the Peel Division of the OSPCA. This individual can be reached at 1-888-668-7722.

We would greatly appreciate any information that anyone might have regarding this incident. We are absolutely stunned, disgusted and devastated by what happened at such a venue (or any where for that matter) - there is no excuse for actions like this - this is animal cruelty - plain and simple. There were other options available than disposing of an iguana like that! No one can give me a good enough reason to justify doing that - no excuse whatsoever.

We would like to thank those few people at the show who actually stood up to help us at the time in trying to find these people and for trying to find a place to temporarily house the iguana - those people that were actually concerned about the iguana itself. We greatly appreciate that and I don't think we had a chance to thank you directly at the time given the nature of the situation at hand.

But as noted already, this is a criminal investigation and any information that you might have to offer would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully this will prevent others from doing the same thing. We have seen all too often what happens to those reptiles that are abandoned outside like this - they are rarely found and saved in time.

I saw them coming into the event around 12:00 - 12:30pm if my memory is correct there were 3 guys and a girl... He had the iguana on his shoulder on a leash.. it was really light in color if i remember correctly... They were shady looking, about 22 and i would say the girl was around 18.. I hope you guys catch them.. they probably bought something and threw the iguana away to make room for whatever new animal they wanted to house is my guess...

I greatly appreciate the wealth of information that has been pouring in - it is encouraging to see how many people remember this group of individuals. All this added info should prove to be extremely valuable when coupled with any information that may be forthcoming from the individual that said they see this person all the time.

Several individuals have now confirmed the time they were at the show - ie roughly noon and that there was a group of them. The individual carrying the iguana initially apparently had brown hair, did not wear glasses and was alsoapparently tall and skinny.

The penalties from jurisdiction to jurisdiction will vary if convicted. Here in Burlington there is a $5000 fine and up to 2 years in prison, on top of the possible prohibition on owning/keeping animals. In many cases though it is tough to get a conviction which is why we are hoping that the people who saw anything - especially the individual that actually witnessed the iguana being pitched over the fence comes forward.

Thankfully the iguana is doing extremely well with fecal and bloodwork being carried out today. Treatment of the thermal burns began immediately on Sunday afternoon after the iguana was removed from the show.

Someone else mentioned that they may have purchased some leopard geckos at the show as well.

You can contact the OSPCA via their site at http://www.ospca.on.ca. They have actually done a wonderful job with the latest bill in terms of increasing the penalities - things before this were quite depressing.

Thank you once again everyone and if we come across any more information I'll be sure to post it. Hopefully these people can be found.

Candace

p.s. If anyone took any pics at the show of the crowd, is there any chance that the people with the iguana were caught in the background in your pics?

Um when reptilerescue but down that clariffacation thing I thought that waht happens if some of you misunderstood me. when I said " those f***** people" I was refering to that ONE person who dumped the iguana NOT the breeders Jeff, joe, mellisa and lots more are all great breeders and I fully comment al those people who helped in the crisis. Um by the way I was at the show around 12-12:40 and I did see someone buy an iguana is that the one who got dumped or was that the one that was replacing the one they dumped or was it just a guy and his girl buying a pet?:o ??Anyway hope there was no confusment :)
LONG LIVED BREEDERS! (and everyone else who loves herps!)
:):) Glad to hear the girls getting better. um just wondering whos she going to live with? I could ask friends if there intrested or but up an add on a kingsnakes.ca ( I know the site that hates us)? Or have you found a home? Did you catch the people responsible?

...there seems to be some confusion stemming from other sources at this point so I don't think there is anything to worry about :) There are a lot of people that are just as upset by this entire thing as yourself Nicky - its sort of heartwarming for us to see so many people stand up against this for an iguana.

Right now she is in temporary foster care just so we can finish the medical diagnostics. Once that has been completed we will post her up for adoption - we will actually probably start accepting applications for her by tomorrow if all goes well.

Some further information did come in last night as well that we are going to keep on file - so far no positive id yet but we have our fingers crossed. Truthfully we are not sure on the exact circumstances of this but what we do know is that they entered the show with the iguana originally. So we'll see how things go from here.

Hopefully my clarification reached the eyes of those that might be misunderstanding the situation at hand.
