heheheee I just LOVE it when they flatten out like that! Our Madagascan Giant does that once in a while. Usually she just constantly hisses. She's a big bluffer :D

Nice hognoses. They are one of my favourite species!

That's a fine-looking snake, Colonel! He seems to have a nice, reddish colouration.
I'm hoping to find at least one female with similar attributes this season.

Do you guys handle your hognoses? Im not sure if it's good to handle them but a lot of the people at the last show were handling them.

Yeah, I handle my little guy. He has bitten me once, but there were no appreciable effects, other than the usual itching I get from any bite.
I have since taken to using a little, thin-wire hook to pick him up with initially. Once he's in hand he's fine.
I should note that I have been cautioned about letting small children handle them without very close supervision.
Their bite can cause pain and slight tissue dammage, according to the info I've been able to find.

Cheers!

Simon

Hognose venom won't cause problems unless they latch on and begin to chew. The venom is much more toxic to frogs and lizards than to mammals as well.

yeah pretty much, they evolved it to eat toads and frogs which is thier natural food.

I too was bitten and no adverse reaction. I don't think the fangs came into play though.

the venom quality for hognose is still under contention, venom or a caustic saliva. Most hognoses cannot be induceded to bite anyway, easterns more common at that question. The rear enlarged teeth are used to deflate frogs and most animals (including humans) have caustic saliva. Scientific evidence still seems to go both ways depending on the results sought.
