View Full Version : good question
I handle my snake once every couple weeks for half an hour or so (once a week for a few seconds between cage and feeding area then back). Saul has never bit me, or even taken a swing. Once It tried to take a chunck outta my girls hand, but Saul let go after a few seconds. I am the only person that handles the snake for the most part, I think Jo has handled her thrice.
My QUESTION IS;
How often should a keeper handle their snakes to ensure a good temperment when they grow up? I imagine some snakes should be handled more often than others, but I am under the impression that leaving it alone keeps it stress free. However I don't want to under handle it.
Saul is almost a year old now. Solomon I. GR Boa around 16 inches.

I don't know about solomons, but I handle my colombian red-tail once a month and she is perfectly tame. She sometimes expects me to be food when i open the tank, but i just push on her nose with the palm of my hand and she's fine.

you could handle you snake every hour, minute, and second of the day, and that would not, or never ensure a fully tame snake. I prefer to handle my snakes every day, or at least every other day, but that doesnt mean that i expect them not to bite, but the odds should be less than once a week or every 2 weeks.

knock on wood, I HAVE NEVER BEEN BITTEN! I handle my Columbian red-tail a few times a week, but there have been times when I didnt for over a month and opened the tank and just pulled him right out with no problems..he is perfectly tame.
I am waiting for my baby Hogg to get shipped soon, and I hear as babies there are quite nippy. So im kinda expecting to get bitten for the first time. But will do my best to avoid it, hopefully my reflexes are quicker then he is..lol

Well, I handle my Balls about 2ce a week.(Pythons that is :D). The CB has never even thought about striking (from what I can tell) and is perfectly tame, no feeding response or nothing as long as shes not in her blue feeding tub. Once shes in there, the site of a mice and BAM.

I make it a point to hold all my snakes every day!! They really get to like it (depending on the species). I would hold your every day and the stress will go down once it gets used to being takin out and handeled.
