Hi,
I am a total novice with California Kings. That said, I was at a pet store this past weekend and saw a snake that really intrigued me. It was all black (really brilliant black) with a snow white stripe. I was quite amazed at how striking it was to look at. I never really considered buying a California King (my corn snake and my frogs are enough for me most days) but I have been thinking about it a lot. Is there anybody in Canada who raises this colour of California Kingsnake? Is this colour very common? I found some web cites with them while I was reading about Kingsnakes, but I have not found anything local yet.

That would be a striped california kingsnake. They are quite beautiful. I love them. I am not sure who exactly has them but they are somewhat common in most places here, and really super common in the states.

Tara, you can easily find one of those from a breeder in Canada. I will have eggs in the next few days for a similer cal king. It has horizontal bands instead of a veritcal stripe down it's back. Still the nice black and white though...
Anyway, many other breeders in Alberta and B.C. breed the exact snake you are talking about. I know Henry Piorun had some last year and I'd bet that Mark IsBell or Annette Thompson would have some too.
Anyway, good luck with your choice Tara! :) Let us know what you end up doing!
Tim, hope you'll be a responsible herper and double check the laws about collecting mountain kings. Good luck anyways!! :D
That's a very good point!
When I lived in Northern California we once caught a 4 foot moutain kingsnake of some sort, my parents fed it a mouse even, which it happily accepted. Then they released it....don't know why they just did.
And in San Bernadino Mountains you can get in lots of trouble for doing such things. I lived there and we caught many many mountain kings over the few years I was there. Nothing over 2 feet though, and all were released within minutes.

Wow TT., that's not good news is it? I know all too well about introduced and alien species here in FL.! Maybe you should try and collect 'as many as you can of those corns, and give the natives a break! Let us know how you do.

It really doesnt matter cuz the only thing around here they eat are sparrows, pidgeon babies, and our over population of feild mice. And the large kings eat most of the corns. But the corns are starting to creep up in numbers so ill try to catch those corns. And i cant belive these corns cuz there living in ARIZONA where the summer is between 110-120* for 4-5 months straight. But we do get irrigation.
Maybe a desert phase corn! :P

Crimsonking, that is a beautiful snake. That looks a lot like the one I saw. I don't really know why I was so taken with it, but I was. Thanks for putting the picture up.

Hi all, I will have Albinos this year, but due to some eggbinding difficulties last year I retired my "reg" female to be a friends pet. I didn't want to chance her again as I had "lost" DOH! another female due to the same reasons the previous year, so I only have Albinos at present. I do have a nice normal female yearling that should be good to go in a couple of years (THX to Katt & Vanan). I would also recomend checking with Henry or Annette either or should have some this year. I may try my Ivory Male to "stud" 2nd clutches with the Albino females this year so I may turn out some (?) later in the season. We'll see. Mark IsBell
P.S. SWEET SNAKE, CRIMSONKING!!!!!!!!!!!!
