Joining two tanks

We have a 15 gallon tank that we were planning on using for our upcoming purchase of another red eye tree frog. While I was at work today my supervisor told me that he has an extra 15 gallon tank that I can have as he is getting rid of it because it has a slight crack in the top corner and can no longer be completely filled with water (this guy is CRAZY about his fish).

I was wondering if it would be possible to connect this tank to our current 15 gallon. I was thinking that I could seal the crack (it is apparently no longer than 2 inches) with some aquarium safe silicone, and smash the bottom of the tank out. I would take the bottom frame off first and cut off the pieces of glass that don't come off on there own. I was thinking that I could than just remove the top frame from off of the unbroken tank and join the two exposed ends of the two tanks using some more silicone.

Has anyone tried this or have done anything similar? I am looking for some advice on it as it will be a new thing for me to do and I wanna make sure that it will work before I start smashing things (even though that is half of the fun).

I have a book here at home about water dragons, anoles and basilisks. In the book they have a diagram of their own modified tanks. They basically did what you want too, except they didn't silicon it on the bigger tanks. They just duct taped it instead(for the bigger ones) so when they needed to clean it, all they needed to do was remove the tape and take off the top tank. I can understand why they would want to do this because it could be hard to clean 2 high tanks this way. I'd show you pics of their tanks, but i don't have a scanner. Anyways it should work out fine, althought if you ask me, i would probably add a small ledge where the 2 tanks will meet, this way there would be a bigger surface contecting the 2, and thus making it stronger(in my opinion...)

well you could all as you have to do is take of the plastic frameing and cut the silicone off and it should make u able to take the peice of glass off insted of smashing it and then join them im not exactly sure how you could do that and make it a good hold but good luck with it

This reminds me of a project I undertook way back in high school to house my box turtle. Ahh, the sound of smashing glass! It worked out pretty well but use caution when you lift the tank. Depending on what you use to seal the two tanks together they may not be all that stable, what with the missing panes and all. Good Luck!
