Im going on holiday on July 20th to tenerife...(YAY):D

BUT ......:( ....


I have a cornsnake and i cant take him with me.....and none of my family like snakes and none of my friends do either....
WHAT will i do with him....What have u done when u went on holiday without ur snake..

I live near a Reptile House so im thinking of asking them to keep him.....But i havent asked yet...think they will???

It depends on how long you're staying away from him. If it's about a week long trip don't worry about him too much. Just make sure you have a large water bowl filled up in his cage so he can be well hydrated. Also make sure the lid is tightly secure so he can't escape. Other than that, I'm sure he'll be fine. While I'm on trips the only herps I have someone take care of are my iguana and bearded dragon because they need daily care, but my snakes are great when I come home to them :).

If you're a little worried, you might want to try the reptile house and see if they will take care of him for you. Some places like that need deposits I think. But it's all up to you.

I leave my snakes at home alone often. I have the lamps on timers so everything is OK. I just have a friend pop by to make sure the heat lamps did not burn out and the temps dropped to much.

I often leave my snakes for weekends ( done this about 3 times so not really often) but in the summer i am going on holiday for a week i'm sure i'll miss them so much!

If you feel confident in the Reptile House providing good care for your snake (clean facilities, knowledgeable staff) then it would be a good option.

If your trip is for 15 days, you can still get by leaving your snake at home for the duration of your trip if you do the following:

- Provide a large source of water. I have seen water dispensers for reptiles and other small creatures which hold a considerable amount of water. One or two of these (I would use 2) should provide enough water for your snake for the 2 weeks.

- Close off as much screen top as possible but leave enough for ventilation, 3/4 of lid for example. This is to help cut down on water evaporation and to keep your water supply lasting.

- Check your temps without any heat. I would recommend unplugging all heat sources while you are gone. As long as the temps don't go below 72° everything should be alright. This will help slow down the snake's metabolism and preserve some energy.

Snakes can go for weeks easily without food and do so in the wild. Your snake not eating for 2 weeks is alright and no harm will come of it. As long as this is not done routinely, a 2 week fast will not hurt your snake. Even hatchlings and juveniles can go 6 weeks without food.
